Today we’ll take a quick look at the HP Envy’s error code 5052/5055. These codes mean that the paper tray is registering as open or the tab is broken. If you’d like a visual demonstration to follow along with, you can watch the video I made about this subject on my YouTube channel, Kevin at BCH.

On your printer’s LCD screen, you’ll probably get a message saying that it can no longer detect the paper tray, regardless of whether the paper tray is open or closed. It constantly says that the paper tray is missing. In the video, you can easily see the problem when I flip the printer over; chances are that’s where you’ll find your problem, too.

This printer was missing one of the legs that fit into a slot when the tray is closed. Only one of these legs matters (the one I like to call the “pointy leg”). The pointy leg will be on the left if you're looking at the top.

Since the head of the other leg is flat, I call that one the “flathead.” Flip the paper tray over so that the flathead is on your left. This leg is useless, so it’s unfortunate that the pointy leg is the one that broke off. To prove how “pointless” the flathead is, I went as far as to break it off and throw it away in the video.

Turn the printer over

Now let’s start fixing this paper tray. The first thing you need to know is that all HP printer parts have a part number. Go ahead and flip the paper tray over to check the part number. The one I used in the video was part number F0V63-40013. I mention part numbers because they may or may not be compatible with different models, so double-check that.

Different countries may have other model numbers. Make sure that the part number you have is the same. Alternatively, you could go to the “printer parts” tab on my website, select “HP,” and look for the “paper handling” category. You should then be able to search for “paper tray and stacker.” From there, look for the repair kit. Or you could just click here.

Start by flipping over your printer, so it’s upside-down and sliding open the paper tray. You’ll see that the base attached to the replacement leg is thin and transparent. It’s made that way on purpose to make it easier to align with the grid.

If you look closely, you should see where the other leg broke off. If it didn’t break out cleanly, use a knife to trim it, so it doesn’t interfere with the new leg. The groove on the new leg should line up with the grid perfectly.

Now get a few pieces of strong adhesive tape. The first will be to secure it on top. Then I recommend having one piece on the left and another on the right to prevent it from wiggling loose. Make sure the paper tray can slide smoothly in and out of place, and then you should be good to go.
