If your printer displays a “door open” error message, the first thing to do is check the front panel to see if the nipple is still there. Check if you can click the front door panel shut. If it refuses to click closed, you will simply have to check for obstructions until you can get it to close. If the open door sensor warning disappears, congratulations! This fix was easy.

However, if the door clicks shut and the error remains, you’ve got a more significant problem on your hand. Clicking closed properly but still displaying the error means that the problem is likely due to a sensor malfunction, which is more complicated—though certainly not impossible—to fix.

In this blog, we will walk through the steps involved in replacing the door sensor and LCD screen on your HP OfficeJet Pro.

To test the printer sensor’s function, stick something solid into the sensor hole. If you still get the error message telling you that the door is not closed, you can safely assume that you need to replace the sensor. However, you can also take a piece of plastic and stick it between the nipple and the printer, and the printer will think that the door is closed. Remove it, and the printer will think the door is open.

Cracked or unresponsive LCD screen

If your screen is cracked or unresponsive, you may also need to replace the LCD. To do so, begin by removing the screws from the printer’s top. There should be eight of these screws altogether. Note that you can remove the printer hinge by simply pushing it forward. At this point, the scanner can be pulled up at a 90-degree angle, exposing an additional four screws underneath. You can now peel the panel off from both sides. On the left side, you will find two cables. The smaller cable is for the door sensor, and the bigger cable is for the LCD panel.

Disconnect both cables and remove the whole top cover. You will also want to remove the smaller cover. Find the base, and pull it up from there. Use your screwdriver to push down on the tab on either side, which should expose the board. Grab your T6 driver bit and use it to remove this board. You now need to remove the LCD. Bend the tab behind the LCD, and it should open. Now you can free all the cables. The LCD hinge is a half-circle, which means you can easily rotate it to pull it out.
