Introduction: Getting Started with Sublimation on Cotton

Sublimation is a popular method for transferring designs onto t-shirts, but it typically works best with polyester fabric. However, you can sublimate on cotton with the right treatment and tools. Before you begin, it's essential to have the right materials on hand. You'll need a cotton t-shirt, sublimation tools, and a treatment for the cotton. While it's generally better to use a polyester t-shirt for sublimation, you can still achieve good results with cotton if treated properly. You can purchase spray-able treatments from Amazon, eBay, or directly from BCH Technologies.

Section 2: Cutting and Positioning the Design

Once you have your cotton t-shirt and treatment, you'll need to cut out your design. Use a piece of cardboard and a knife to cut around the design, making it slightly larger than necessary. When positioning the design on the t-shirt, place it high up to avoid the "belly print" effect. Stick the design to the shirt and try it on to ensure it looks good when worn.

Section 3: Applying the Treatment

To sublimate on cotton, you must treat the fabric first. BCH Technologies provides a bottle of treatment for this purpose. Shake the bottle well and spray an even coating on the area where you'll be placing the design. Allow the treatment to dry completely at room temperature.

To help guide your design placement, use a bottle of BCH UV Ink. The dried ink is invisible but will light up under a black light. Add a drop of UV ink to the treatment and brush it onto the four corners of the design area. This will make it easier to see where to place the transfer later on.

Before you start sublimating, it's crucial to calibrate your heat press. When ordering sublimation prints, ask the provider to include a calibration sheet with the same settings as your ordered prints. Cut out a small square and set your heat press to 385 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 seconds. Test on a treated piece of fabric to ensure the treatment works correctly.

Section 6: Transferring the Design

With everything prepared, it's time to transfer your design. Protect the top and bottom of your heat press with sheets of paper to avoid color gas release. Remove any wrinkles from the t-shirt with a pre-press, then place the transfer paper on the treated area. Press the t-shirt according to the calibration settings, and remember to adjust as needed.
