How to Resolve Epson ET-15000 Error Code 000031

Question:

I'm working with the Epson ET-15000. From what I understand from the previous owner, they had a bad paper jam and pulled the paper out vigorously, ending up with the 000031 code. I've opened the entire printer, cleared any paper, and checked the sensor belt, which looks fine. However, when it moves to one side, it makes a screeching sound and then shows that error code. Any idea what this could be and how to fix it? I've even turned the wheel to reset the white thing and started it up again several times, but I still get the same noise and error code.

Epson Error Code 000031 is indeed a perplexing issue that has troubled many printer users. This error typically indicates a "fake paper jam," where the printer mistakenly believes there is a paper jam when there isn't one. Let's break down the steps to resolve this issue effectively.

Error Code 000031 Explained:

  • Meaning: CR load position excess load error. This means your CR  (Printhead Carriage Return) has searched to the end of the clear timing belt but still cannot read enough digits.
  • Description:
    • PF Motor failure
    • PF drive mechanism overload (paper jam, foreign object)
    • Tooth skip of the PF Timing Belt
    • Improper tension of the PF Timing Belt
    • Cable disconnection

Since the errors are primarily related to the CR, here are detailed steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue:

  1. Check the Clear Timing Belt:
    • Ensure that the clear timing belt is properly inserted into the reader. Refer to this video for guidance.
    • Clean the timing belt to ensure there is no debris or residue affecting its performance. There are couple of other things to check, such as the CR lock, so you can refer to the video and I won't elaborate here extensively.
  2. Verify the CR's FFC Cables:
    • Make sure the Flat Flexible Cables (FFC) of the CR are correctly positioned. For a visual guide, watch the video in this article.
  3. Inspect the PF Encoder Disc:
    • Check if the PF (Paper Feed) encoder disc is securely attached. This disc is often held in place with double-sided tape, which can sometimes fail. Reattach it if necessary.

Addressing printer issues can be complex due to the hands-on nature of the problems. For instance, resolving a simple clog might involve detailed unclogging procedures. If the printer has been inactive for a while, a comprehensive ink system service might be required. Issues like a "paper jam" can have numerous causes, often becoming an in-office joke. Therefore, we can't offer remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs.

We provide in-person evaluation and repair services through our local diagnostic facility. Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks for your turn to drop off or mail in your printer. Our services can repair either the whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions for mail-in or local drop-off services. However, we recognize that our rates might not be the most economical, so we highly recommend self-help through online research.
