Epson ET-8550 DTF Conversion vs. A3+ Roll-to-Roll DTF Printer: Which Is More Stable and Recommended?

I am trying to decide between purchasing a newly converted Epson ET-8550 from BCH Technologies and the A3+ KevinR2R roll-to-roll DTF printer. I am already very familiar with the ET-8550, so naturally I am leaning toward that platform. However, I also trust BCH Technologies' experience with DTF equipment and assume you would not offer the roll-to-roll system unless you believed in it.

Between the converted ET-8550 and the A3+ roll-to-roll printer, which one do you consider more stable and which path would you recommend?

In this case, I would not say that one of these printers is universally "better" or "more stable" than the other. They are designed around two very different printing patterns. The most important question is not simply which printer is better-it is how often you are going to print and how much material you need to produce when you do print.

For my own production, I normally print approximately 100-200 transfers per week, which can amount to roughly 6,000-10,000 transfers per year. At that volume, individually handling every sheet-cutting film, applying powder, curing it, and repeating the process-is simply not practical for me. Roll-to-roll printing becomes much more efficient.

There is also another interesting factor with frequent DTF printing: regular operation keeps ink moving through the system. That does not mean clogging becomes impossible, and proper maintenance is still essential, particularly with white ink. However, continuous use greatly reduces the amount of time that pigment has to settle and dry inside the printhead. In a very high-volume environment, the printhead may eventually wear from normal use before long-term idle-related clogging becomes the primary concern.

That is very different from a printer that produces a few jobs and then sits unused for one or two weeks.

One of the biggest advantages of the KevinV2 system is its ability to accommodate intermittent printing and longer periods of inactivity.

After you finish a printing session, you perform our recommended after-job maintenance procedure. Once the printer has been properly prepared for storage, it does not require the same type of daily attention that a conventional continuously operating DTF system normally requires.

When you are ready to print again, you perform the recommended wake-up procedure, verify the nozzle condition, prepare the ink system, print your jobs, and then perform the after-job procedure again before putting the printer back into an idle state.

For somebody who might print heavily one weekend and then not print again for a week or two, this is an important advantage.

It also makes the KevinV2 particularly attractive as a backup DTF printer. For example, if your primary production printer goes down and you suddenly have customer orders that must be completed, having an ET-8550 KevinV2 prepared as an emergency machine can be extremely valuable.

Why Your Familiarity With the ET-8550 Matters

You mentioned that you already know the ET-8550 very well. I would not underestimate that advantage.

Knowing how the carriage behaves, how the paper path works, how to access components, what sounds are normal, and what symptoms indicate trouble can save an enormous amount of time.

Even if another printer is technically capable of higher production, there is value in operating a platform that you already understand.

The ET-8550 also has a large existing repair and troubleshooting knowledge base because so many of these printers are in circulation. We have personally spent a great deal of time working with this platform and documenting its mechanical and electrical systems.

The Main Limitation of the ET-8550: Sheet-Fed Production

The major disadvantage is production workflow.

The ET-8550 is fundamentally a sheet-fed printer. It is not a true roll-to-roll production machine.

You can certainly cut longer pieces from an A3-width roll and print multiple designs together on a longer piece of film where the software and feeding configuration allow it. That can make the process more efficient than printing one small design per sheet.

However, you still have to handle the film manually.

You must cut it, powder it, remove excess powder, cure or bake it, and organize the finished transfers.

If you are printing only a few sheets, this is perfectly reasonable.

If you are producing hundreds of transfers every week, that manual workflow starts becoming the bottleneck rather than the printer itself.

Option 2: KevinR2R A3+ Roll-to-Roll DTF Printer

Its biggest advantage is straightforward: you can work from a roll instead of treating every transfer as an individual sheet.

For somebody printing significant volume, this changes the entire workflow.

Instead of repeatedly loading film, printing a sheet, removing the sheet, powdering it, curing it, and starting over, a roll-to-roll workflow allows much longer uninterrupted production runs. When paired with an appropriate powdering and curing workflow, the productivity difference becomes substantial.

The KevinR2R can also handle individual pieces of film if necessary, although feeding sheets individually through a machine designed primarily around roll media naturally requires a little more operator involvement.

Which One Is More Stable?

This is where the answer gets interesting.

If you print regularly, I would consider the KevinR2R the more appropriate production platform.

If you print intermittently and need the printer to tolerate longer idle periods, I would consider the KevinV2 ET-8550 the more forgiving platform.

Those statements are not contradictory.

A roll-to-roll DTF printer is happiest when it is being used. Regular printing keeps ink circulating, keeps the wet side of the system active, and allows the automatic maintenance features to work in the environment they were designed for.

The KevinR2R performs automatic maintenance during regular operation, so under a consistent production schedule it generally requires much less daily manual intervention than many people expect.

However, our recommended working guideline is that you should not purchase the KevinR2R with the intention of allowing it to sit unused for extended periods. Approximately three days should be considered the practical maximum idle period under normal recommended operating conditions. Environmental conditions, ink condition, temperature, humidity, maintenance history, and the condition of the printhead can all influence this.

That is especially important because DTF white ink contains a heavy concentration of pigment. White pigment naturally settles over time, which is why circulation, agitation, and proper maintenance are so important.

A printer that runs frequently usually handles this better than a printer that sits.

The KevinV2 approaches the problem differently. It is specifically configured around an after-job maintenance and wake-up procedure, making it better suited to users who may need to place the machine into an idle state between batches.

Don't Interpret "Automatic Maintenance" as "No Maintenance"

One thing I would emphasize with either system is that there really is no maintenance-free white-ink DTF printer.

Automatic circulation and cleaning systems reduce operator involvement, but they do not eliminate the basic realities of DTF ink.

You still need to pay attention to things such as:

  • White ink condition and settling

  • Nozzle checks

  • Capping station condition

  • Wiper cleanliness

  • Waste ink flow

  • Dampers and ink delivery

  • Printhead surface contamination

  • Room temperature and humidity

  • Ink expiration and storage

  • Powder contamination around the printer

A machine that is used frequently but neglected can still develop problems. Likewise, an occasionally used printer that is maintained properly can remain reliable for a surprisingly long time.

Your Printing Volume Should Make the Decision

This is the easiest way I know to decide between the two.

If you are going to print occasionally, perhaps completing several orders and then leaving the printer unused for days or weeks, I would lean toward the KevinV2 ET-8550.

If you already know the ET-8550 platform and enjoy working on it, that makes the KevinV2 even more attractive.

If you are going to print consistently every week, particularly if you expect your volume to increase, I would seriously consider the KevinR2R.

At 100-200 transfers per week, I personally would rather use the roll-to-roll printer because the labor savings begin to outweigh the convenience of the sheet-fed platform.

The printer itself is only one part of production. You also have to consider how much of your day is spent standing beside the machine cutting, powdering, baking, and handling individual pieces of film.

At sufficient volume, labor becomes far more expensive than the difference between the printers.

What If Your Volume Is Somewhere in the Middle?

This is probably the most difficult situation.

Suppose you print 20 transfers one week, 150 the next week, and then nothing for two weeks.

In that situation, neither answer is automatically perfect.

The KevinR2R gives you much better production capability during the busy weeks, but you have to remain disciplined about keeping the printer active and properly maintained during quiet periods.

The KevinV2 gives you considerably more flexibility when business slows down, but when the large orders arrive you will spend more time manually handling film.

For a business with highly unpredictable volume, the ET-8550 may therefore be the safer starting point.

For a business that already has steady orders and expects growth, I would generally rather build the workflow around the roll-to-roll machine.

What I Would Choose for 100-200 Transfers Per Week

At the volume I personally print-approximately 100-200 transfers every week-I prefer the roll-to-roll approach.

It is not because I think the ET-8550 is a bad printer. We have spent an enormous amount of time developing our ET-8550 conversion precisely because we believe it is an extremely useful platform.

It is simply a matter of workflow.

At several thousand transfers per year, coating/powdering and curing individual sheets becomes an enormous amount of repetitive labor.

With that kind of regular usage, I want the printer running.

Frequent operation also means the white ink is constantly being moved through the system rather than sitting stationary for long periods. That can substantially reduce idle-related settling and clogging problems, although it does not eliminate them completely.

At very high usage, normal printhead wear may eventually become a more important consideration than long-term idle clogging.

Support, Printhead Warranty, and Service Plans

Both systems have their own private Facebook support groups.

If you own one of these systems and have questions about routine operation, maintenance procedures, setup, or known operating issues, the appropriate group gives you access to information specifically related to that platform.

Both systems also include a 30-day printhead warranty, except in situations where the printer was purchased without a printhead.

So, Is the KevinR2R Better?

For production, yes-I personally prefer the KevinR2R when the workload justifies it.

For flexibility, especially when the printer might sit for extended periods, I prefer the KevinV2 ET-8550.

So I would describe the decision this way:

KevinV2 ET-8550: Best for occasional or irregular printing, familiar ET-8550 users, sheet-based production, longer idle periods, smaller operations, and use as an emergency backup printer.

KevinR2R: Best for frequent printing, steady weekly production, larger order volumes, roll-to-roll workflow, reduced film handling, and businesses expecting production volume to grow.

Since you are already extremely comfortable with the ET-8550, there is absolutely nothing wrong with leaning toward it. Familiarity has real value.

On the other hand, if you already know that you will consistently be producing around 100-200 transfers every week-or expect to reach that volume-I would personally lean toward the KevinR2R. At that point, the larger question is not whether you can make the ET-8550 work. You certainly can. The question is how much of your time you want to spend manually handling sheets.

Both printers can be good choices. They are simply optimized for different businesses.
