Epson ET-8550 DTF Conversion: Paper Jam Error, No Power, Mainboard Fuse, and Converted Printhead Options

Question
I converted an Epson ET-8550 to DTF, and it had been working well until recently. The printer suddenly reported a paper jam even though there was no paper physically jammed inside. It instructed me to restart the printer, but after I turned it off, the printer would no longer power on.
I am considering purchasing the BCH ET-8550 all-in-one DTF conversion kit. Since the conversion uses additional control boards, could installing the kit correct the paper-jam issue and also solve the current no-power condition? I suspect the original ET-8550 mainboard may have a blown fuse, but I am wondering whether the conversion electronics would bypass that problem.
I am also hesitant to perform the nipple conversion on the ET-8550 printhead myself. Is it possible to purchase a printhead that has already been converted for use with the ET-8550 DTF conversion?

The Conversion Board Can Correct Some False Paper-Jam Conditions, but Not Every Paper-Jam Error
The first thing I would separate is the original paper-jam message from the later no-power condition. They could be related, but they could also be two independent problems.
One purpose of our ET-8550 DTF conversion electronics is to modify or stabilize certain signals that become problematic when the printer is used with transparent PET film instead of normal paper. The original ET-8550 was designed around paper, so transparent DTF film can sometimes cause the printer's paper-detection and page-width logic to behave differently than Epson intended.
Our conversion electronics address several of these film-related signals, which can eliminate some "fake" paper-jam conditions or premature film rejection caused by the printer interpreting transparent film incorrectly.
However, this is very different from overriding every paper-jam signal.
If the printer has a legitimate mechanical problem, the conversion system will not repair it. For example, a genuine paper-feed or carriage problem could involve a damaged or jammed gear, an incorrectly positioned feed mechanism, a damaged encoder system, a misaligned frame, an obstruction in the paper path, or interference from tubing, wiring, or other components added during the DTF conversion.
In other words, the conversion electronics are intended to correct signals associated with using DTF film. They are not intended to make the printer ignore genuine mechanical failures.
This is why, in our lab, I prefer the ET-8550 to be fully operational and mechanically sound before performing the conversion. If the printer already has an unresolved problem, converting it at the same time makes troubleshooting considerably more difficult because you can no longer easily determine whether a new symptom originates from the original printer or from the conversion.
The No-Power Condition Is a Separate and More Important Issue
The fact that the printer displayed a paper-jam message, was shut down, and then would not turn on again changes the diagnosis significantly.
If by "will not turn on" you mean there is absolutely no display, no light, no sound, and no initialization movement, I would not assume that the original problem is simply another false paper-jam signal.
A completely dead ET-8550 can have an electrical problem involving the power supply, original mainboard, mainboard power circuitry, connectors, wiring, or a downstream component that has created a short.
Your suspicion about a mainboard fuse is certainly possible. The ET-8550 mainboard contains F1 and F2 fuse circuits, and these can become involved in printhead/mainboard electrical failures. However, a blown fuse should generally be considered a symptom until you determine what caused it to open.
Simply replacing a fuse without finding the underlying short can result in the replacement fuse failing again. In some cases, the damage can extend beyond the fuse to transistors, driver circuitry, the printhead, or other components on the mainboard.
The Conversion Boards Will Not Bypass a Dead Original Mainboard
This is probably the most important point regarding your proposed purchase.
The DTF conversion control boards do not replace the basic requirement for a functioning ET-8550 mainboard and power system. They interact with and modify specific signals needed for the DTF conversion, including film-feed and sensor-related behavior, but they cannot make a printer with a failed original mainboard suddenly power up.
Therefore, if your existing ET-8550 currently has no power because its original mainboard, power supply, fuse circuit, or another critical electrical component has failed, installing the conversion boards by themselves would not be the correct way to resolve that condition.
The no-power problem should be diagnosed first.
Once the ET-8550 can reliably power on, initialize, move the carriage and feed mechanisms correctly, and operate without an unexplained hardware fault, then it becomes much easier to evaluate what portion of the remaining paper-jam behavior is associated specifically with transparent DTF film.
Be Careful About Replacing the Mainboard Before Finding the Original Failure
If you determine that the mainboard itself has failed, I would also be cautious about installing another mainboard without investigating why the original board failed.
With DTF conversions, several components deserve attention when an electrical failure occurs. These include the printhead, the printhead FFC cables, cable connectors, and areas where ink or cleaning fluid could have reached electrical contacts.
A shorted printhead or damaged FFC cable can damage the mainboard. If that underlying short remains and another working mainboard is installed, there is a risk of damaging the replacement board as well.
The same principle applies to a replacement printhead. A new printhead should not automatically be installed into a printer with an unresolved electrical problem because the replacement head can also be damaged if the original fault is still present. BCH's current printhead information likewise warns that mainboard, cable, fuse, and driver-related faults should be considered before installing another head.
What About Error Codes 031004, 031005, or 031006?
You did not mention a numerical Epson error code in your question, only a paper-jam message. Therefore, I would not assign one of these codes to your printer without actually seeing it.
However, if the printer displayed an error such as 031004, 031005, or 031006 before becoming inoperative, that information would be significant because these errors can be associated with the ET-8550's printhead/mainboard electrical system, including fuse and related circuit failures.
In particular, 031006 frequently deserves investigation of the printhead, FFC cables, fuses, and mainboard circuitry rather than being treated as an ordinary mechanical paper jam.
If your only message was a standard paper-jam warning and there was never a 031004, 031005, 031006, or another numerical service code, then I would keep the original paper-jam symptom and the subsequent no-power condition somewhat separate until further diagnosis shows that they are connected.
Can You Purchase an Already Converted ET-8550 Printhead?

There is a specific conversion/application requirement involved. A nipple-converted ET-8550 head changes the ink-delivery interface, but that does not mean every XP600 application is electrically or mechanically interchangeable.

What I Would Resolve Before Proceeding With the Conversion
In your particular case, I would treat the printer's present no-power condition as the priority rather than expecting the conversion kit to correct it.
The conversion system may indeed help if your earlier paper-jam message was caused by PET film confusing the ET-8550's normal paper-detection logic. However, it cannot correct a jammed mechanism, damaged gear, physical obstruction, failed original mainboard, failed power supply, shorted printhead, damaged FFC cable, or another genuine electrical fault.
Once those original printer problems are separated from the DTF-specific issues, the conversion becomes much easier to evaluate and much safer for the replacement electronics and printhead.
