Is an Epson ET-8550 DTF Conversion with Error Code 031006 Worth Repairing?

Question:
I have an Epson ET-8550 that was converted to DTF. It sat unused for about two months, and the printhead became clogged, especially from the white ink. I tried cleaning it, but the cleaning was not successful. Now the printer is showing error code 031006. I know this error can mean several different things, and I have seen from your videos that you have repaired many problems like this. Is this type of error always fixable, and would it be worth sending the printer in for repair?
Answer:
For your Epson ET-8550, the situation you described is unfortunately very common with DTF conversions. When a printer sits for two months with DTF ink inside, the white ink is usually the biggest concern. White DTF ink contains heavy pigment, and if it is not circulated or used regularly, it can settle, thicken, clog the dampers, clog the printhead, and sometimes cause pressure-related problems throughout the ink delivery system. Once the printer has been cleaned repeatedly without success, the issue may no longer be only a clog. It can become a combination of ink blockage, electrical damage, printhead failure, cable damage, or mainboard damage.
The error code you mentioned, 031006, is one of the more serious Epson ET-8550 errors. It can be related to the printhead circuit, printhead cable, carriage-related electrical failure, or mainboard damage. In many cases, especially after unsuccessful cleaning attempts, this error appears when moisture, ink, cleaning solution, or electrical shorting affects the printhead connection. If the printhead cable has ink residue, corrosion, a bent pin, or a short, it can damage the printhead or mainboard. Likewise, if the printhead itself shorts internally, it can send the problem back to the mainboard.
So, are all 031006 situations fixable? In theory, many of them can be repaired, but not every case is economically worth repairing. The repair usually depends on which parts were damaged and whether the printer has other DTF-related problems besides the error code. A converted ET-8550 that sat for two months with white DTF ink may need more than a simple reset or cleaning. It may require replacing or repairing several components.
If you decide to handle the repair yourself, the common repair path for 031006 often includes checking or replacing the following:
The mainboard may need to be repaired if the printhead circuit was damaged. For individual mainboard repair, the cost may be around $85, depending on the condition and service needed.
The printhead cable should usually be replaced if there is any sign of ink contamination, corrosion, burning, folding damage, or poor connection. This part is usually inexpensive, often around $7 to $10, but it is extremely important. Reusing a damaged or contaminated cable can damage a new printhead or repaired board.
The printhead may also need replacement, especially if the original head is badly clogged, electrically shorted, or damaged from cleaning attempts. A replacement printhead for this type of printer can often cost around $150 to $200, depending on the source and availability.
Before replacing parts, I would strongly recommend inspecting the printhead cable terminals and the printhead connector area carefully. If there is any wet ink, cleaning solution, white residue, burn mark, or corrosion, do not keep powering the printer on. Turning the printer on repeatedly while there is a short can make the mainboard damage worse. The safest approach is to disconnect power, inspect the cables and printhead area, and only continue once everything is dry, clean, and properly seated.

As for whether it is worth sending the printer in, that depends on your budget, your comfort level with repair work, and how much you have already invested in the printer and DTF setup. You can review our full whole-printer diagnostic and repair service here: DTF, DTG, Eco-Solvent Whole Printer Diagnostic Fee and Repair Labor Deposit [https://bchtechnologies.com/collections/printer-repair-service/products/dtf-dtg-ecosolvent-whole-printer-diagnostic-fee-repair-labor-deposit-limited-opening].
That page explains how our whole-printer repair process works, including the diagnostic fee, labor deposit, repair rates, labor charges, supported printer models, what is included or excluded, parts policy, shipping responsibilities, packing instructions, repair queue, warranty terms, liability risks, and storage or pickup policies. I recommend reading it carefully before deciding, because a converted DTF printer can become expensive to repair if the printhead, cable, board, and ink system all need attention.
Another option is to consider having the ET-8550 converted or reworked properly for DTF use. If the original conversion was not done correctly, or if the printer has already developed ink circulation and white ink clogging problems, it may be worth looking at the conversion service instead of only repairing the current failure. You can review that service here: ET-8550 DTF Printer Conversion Labor Only [https://bchtechnologies.com/collections/printer-repair-service/products/conversion-of-et-8550-printer-labor-only].
In short, 031006 is often repairable, but it is not always a simple or low-cost repair. For your specific case, because the printer sat for two months with DTF white ink and then developed the error after cleaning attempts, I would suspect a possible combination of clogged printhead, damaged printhead cable, and possible mainboard issue. The printer can likely be evaluated and repaired, but whether it is worth it depends on how much you are willing to invest compared with replacing the printer or doing a proper DTF conversion again.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair because many of these problems require hands-on inspection. For that reason, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting, detailed repair guidance, or one-on-one support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility: BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks before your printer can be dropped off or accepted into the queue. Our services are structured to repair either a full printer or specific parts, with instructions provided for how to proceed. However, we understand that our rates are not the most economical option. For that reason, we strongly recommend self-help through online research whenever possible. You can start with YouTube or visit our YouTube homepage at BCH Technologies on YouTube [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. Use the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar to search for specific topics. I receive dozens of questions every day asking for videos on specific repairs, and after creating videos for the past nine years, it is difficult to remember every single one. YouTube's search function is usually the fastest way to find the right video, and it may also recommend helpful videos from other channels.
Thank you again for reaching out and for supporting BCH Technologies. I hope this helps you decide whether to repair the ET-8550, attempt the repair yourself, or consider a more complete DTF conversion approach.
