Epson ET-8550 Error 031006 After a Roller Spring Falls Out: Is It Related to the Printhead FFC Cable?

While working on my Epson EcoTank ET-8550, I pulled out a roller and noticed that a tiny spring came loose. The printer is now displaying error code 031006. Answer
The small spring that came out with the roller is most likely not directly related to error code 031006 or to the printhead FFC cable issue discussed in the video. A roller spring usually belongs to a paper-feeding, pressure, guide, or return mechanism. When it is missing or installed incorrectly, it may cause symptoms such as:

Paper failing to load correctly

A roller remaining raised or lowered
-
Skewed or uneven paper feeding
-
Repeated paper jams
-
A mechanical clicking or slipping sound
-
A paper-feed component failing to return to its resting position
By contrast, error code 031006 is generally associated with the printhead's electrical or temperature-monitoring system. It is more likely to involve the printhead, the flat flexible cables connecting the printhead to the mainboard, contaminated cable contacts, an improperly seated connector, cable damage, or damage to the printhead-driving circuit.
Therefore, although both problems may have appeared at approximately the same time, they should initially be treated as two separate issues.
What Error Code 031006 May Indicate
The Epson ET-8550 constantly monitors the printhead's electrical condition. If the printer detects an abnormal signal, open circuit, short circuit, incorrect temperature reading, or communication problem in the printhead circuit, it may stop operation and display error code 031006.
Possible causes include:

A printhead FFC cable is not fully inserted
The ET-8550 uses flat flexible cables to carry signals between the printhead and the mainboard. Even if a cable appears to be installed, it may be slightly crooked, inserted at an angle, or not pushed completely into the connector.

The cable contacts are contaminated
Ink, cleaning solution, moisture, fingerprints, corrosion, or residue on the exposed contacts can interfere with communication. A contaminated cable can also create a short circuit when the printer is powered on.

The FFC cable is damaged
A cable can develop a small crease, torn conductor, puncture, burned contact, or internal break. Damage is not always obvious from the outside.

The cable was installed in the wrong orientation
The exposed conductive contacts must face the correct direction inside each connector. Installing a cable backward may prevent communication and, in some cases, damage the electronics.

The printhead connector or internal printhead circuit is damaged
If ink or cleaning fluid entered the printhead connector, the internal circuitry may have shorted. A failed thermistor or another electrical component inside the printhead can also trigger this error family.

The mainboard printhead-driving circuit has failed
A shorted printhead or incorrectly installed cable can damage a fuse, transistor, MOSFET, driver component, or nearby circuit on the mainboard. Replacing or reseating the cable will not clear the error if board-level damage has already occurred.
What to Inspect First
Before continuing, turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord. Do not reconnect or remove printhead cables while the machine is powered. Working on a live printhead circuit can damage the printhead, mainboard, or both.
Carefully inspect the printhead FFC cables for:

Ink or moisture on the contacts

Burned, darkened, or discolored contact points

Scratches across the conductive traces
-
Sharp folds or creases
-
Torn cable edges
-
Bent or missing contacts
-
Incorrect cable orientation
-
Uneven insertion into the connector
Also inspect the locking tabs on the cable connectors. A damaged or partially open locking tab may allow the cable to move, even when it initially appears secure.
If the cables were recently removed or replaced, compare their routing and orientation with clear reference photographs taken before disassembly. The cables should follow their original path without being pinched, stretched, twisted, or rubbing against moving carriage components.

Do Not Repeatedly Power On the Printer
If you find wet ink, cleaning solution, burned contacts, or a visibly damaged cable, do not repeatedly turn the printer on to see whether the error disappears. Each power cycle can place additional stress on the printhead-driving circuit.
The source of contamination must be corrected first. Any affected components must be completely dry before power is restored. However, even after drying and reseating the cables, error code 031006 may remain if the printhead or mainboard was already electrically damaged.
What About the Tiny Roller Spring?
Although the spring is probably not the cause of error code 031006, it should still be identified and reinstalled before operating the printer normally.
Do not place the spring into a location simply because it appears to fit. Springs in the ET-8550 can control roller pressure, lever return, sensor flags, paper guides, or pickup mechanisms. Installing one in the wrong position may cause a paper jam or damage another moving part.
Try to determine:

Which roller or assembly was being removed when the spring fell out

Whether one end of the spring has a hook, loop, or straight leg

Whether there is a matching spring on the opposite side
-
Whether nearby plastic parts have small spring posts or anchor holes

Whether a lever now moves freely without returning to its original position

Whether the roller has lost tension or pressure
Photographs taken immediately before and after disassembly are especially helpful. Comparing the left and right sides of a symmetrical assembly may also reveal the correct spring position.
The spring should be addressed as a mechanical paper-path issue, while error code 031006 should be diagnosed as a printhead electrical or communication issue.
If the Error Appeared Without Touching the Printhead Cables
If you only removed a paper-feed roller and did not touch the printhead, carriage, FFC cables, or mainboard, the timing may be coincidental. However, it is also possible that the printer was tilted, moved, or partially disassembled in a way that disturbed an already loose cable or allowed leaked ink to reach an electrical connection.
Check whether:

The printer was placed on its side

Ink leaked while the printer was tilted

The carriage was moved manually
-
A cover or cable guide was removed
-
A cable became trapped during reassembly

The printer was powered on while partially disassembled
These details may explain why an electrical error appeared during an otherwise mechanical repair.
