Epson WF-7720 Error Code 034503: Troubleshooting Carriage Movement and Capping Station Issues

Question:

I’m using an Epson WF-7720 and followed your guide on in-depth unclogging for Epson printers. Now I’m getting error code 034503, even though everything looks fine and closed. What could be causing this issue?

Answer:

What Error 034503 on the Epson WF-7720 Really Means

The Error Code 034503 on the Epson WF-7720 usually indicates that the printer is having trouble with the carriage movement. Specifically, the printer may think that the printhead carriage is unable to move freely, or it may falsely detect that the cartridge cover is open, even when everything seems properly closed.

This is typically a mechanical rather than electronic issue, and it often comes down to interference or obstruction within the carriage path, especially around the capping station.

Possible Causes and Fixes

Let’s break down the likely causes and what you can do about each one:

1. Physical Obstruction Inside the Printer

Sometimes, a small piece of broken plastic, paper debris, or even a cable out of place can obstruct the movement of the printhead carriage.

What to do:

  • Power off the printer and manually slide the printhead carriage left and right.

  • Listen or feel for any resistance.

  • If there’s anything blocking its path, remove it carefully.

  • Pay special attention to the area around the capping station (where the printhead parks).

2. Dry or Dirty Carriage Rails

The rails or guide rods that the carriage slides along may be dry or sticky, making it hard for the printer to complete its self-tests.

Fix:

  • Apply a small amount of light machine oil or synthetic grease to the carriage rods.

  • Move the carriage back and forth by hand to distribute the lubricant.

3. Capping Station Gear Misalignment

Inside the capping station, there’s a switch gear mechanism that toggles between cleaning the white ink lines and color ink lines (in printers that support DTF or modified cleaning stations). If this gear is out of sync or jammed, it can confuse the printer’s logic, leading to a carriage-related error like 034503.

Troubleshooting steps:

  • Inspect the gear teeth and make sure they are properly aligned.

  • Gently rotate the gear by hand (when the printer is off) to reset its position.

  • Make sure the capping pad and wiper blade aren’t stuck in an extended or retracted position.

4. Cartridge Cover Detection Fault

Even though the cartridge lid is closed, a faulty sensor or misaligned plastic lever inside the mechanism could be falsely triggering the “cover open” signal. This is sometimes triggered by the printhead not parking correctly due to a jam in the capping station or gear misalignment.

Suggestion:

  • Remove and reseat the printhead cover.

  • Inspect the small tabs or triggers that activate the cartridge lid sensor.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, all diagnostics are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before your printer is seen. Our repair options include full printer servicing or specific component-level diagnostics. However, we recognize that not everyone may find our pricing ideal, so we strongly recommend self-guided troubleshooting whenever possible. For that, your best bet is to explore videos on YouTube. Visit our YouTube channel homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies) and use the search icon near the “About” tab to find specific repair topics. We receive many questions each day, and with hundreds of videos made over the last nine years, it’s best to search directly—YouTube may even suggest relevant third-party videos that can help.
