Question:
I recently refilled my Canon OEM cartridges (PG-240/CL-241, also compatible with PG-245/CL-246) for my TS5120 printer, but I’m not sure how to reset the ink levels so they show 100%. Is there a way to do this?
1. Understanding Why Ink Levels Don’t Automatically Reset
Canon’s built-in ink monitoring system is a one-way counter—it tracks how many pages have been printed, not the actual ink volume. When you refill your cartridges, the monitor still thinks the cartridge is empty because the page count has reached its limit. Unfortunately, you cannot reset this counter to 100% before it hits its maximum.
2. Priming After Refilling
If your printer is printing blank pages or producing poor-quality output after a refill, the ink might not be flowing correctly. This is usually due to air trapped in the cartridge’s sponge or printhead. The solution is to prime the cartridge:
-
Use a priming clip tool to remove air and draw ink into the printhead.
-
If you purchased our “EZ” series (First-Timer Kit), a priming clip is included.
-
Otherwise, you can order the correct clip:

-

-
3. Disabling the Ink Monitor When It Reaches Maximum Count
When the cartridge’s counter maxes out, the printer will show an error message:
“The following cartridge has run out.”
At this point:
-
Do not close the error message on your computer screen.
-
On your printer, press and hold the STOP/RESUME button (triangle inside a circle) for 5 seconds.
-
The error should clear, and the ink monitor for that cartridge will be turned off, allowing you to continue printing indefinitely.

Addressing printer issues can be tricky because they often require hands-on troubleshooting. That’s why we can’t offer remote repair services or personalized tech support for printer repairs. We do, however, provide in-person evaluations through our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Please note that due to high demand, service is on a first-come, first-served basis and it may take a few weeks before we can work on your printer. Our services can cover full printer repairs or individual component fixes, with clear instructions on the next steps. We also understand our rates may not be the cheapest, so we strongly recommend exploring self-help resources online—starting with our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Use the search icon next to the “About” section to quickly locate specific topics. This is often the fastest way to find the information you need.
