Question:
I watched your video, "2 Genius Hacks to Fill Ink in ET-8550 Dampers After Printhead Install." I have an Epson L8168, but my Gray (GY) ink ran out and I can't find any replacement nearby. Is it possible to replace the Gray ink with another color?
Answer:
Now, regarding your question: the Gray (GY) ink in your Epson L8168 printer is not interchangeable with other ink colors. The Gray ink is a unique formulation-it's not just a diluted black ink. Its purpose is to improve tonal balance and smooth gradients in photo printing, especially in skin tones, black-and-white images, and neutral color transitions. Replacing it with another ink (such as Black, Light Black, or even a custom mix) would cause color inaccuracies, banding, or muddy tones in your prints.
Epson's six-color systems like the L8168 and ET-8550 use Gray ink to bridge the tonal gap between Black and Light Magenta/Cyan. Without it, the printer's color management cannot correctly balance photo output, resulting in uneven grays and reduced image quality.
If you're having trouble finding genuine Gray ink locally, you can purchase compatible Gray ink from our online store. We carry Premium 100 mL Gray (not Black) Sublimation Ink for Epson XP-15000 (https://bchtechnologies.com/products/premium-100-ml-gray-not-black-sublimation-ink-for-epson-xp-15000-is100red-ae?_pos=4&_sid=b76ce34f4&_ss=r). Although we are based in the USA, many customers outside the country find it worthwhile to import because of the ink's quality and color accuracy.
If you're converting your printer for DTF or sublimation, note that color substitution requires ICC profile adjustments and consistent ink testing to achieve proper calibration. However, this is not recommended for beginners or for those using the printer for standard photo printing.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks before we can accept a drop-off. Our services cover both full printer repairs and specific component work, with clear instructions on how to proceed. That said, we understand that our rates might not be the lowest, so we encourage self-help options through online research. You can start by exploring our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies)-use the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar to find videos on your printer model or issue.
