Epson Stylus Photo 1400 Shows Red X on Every Ink Cartridge After Printhead Replacement

Question:

I replaced the printhead on my Epson Stylus Photo 1400. The first two head-cleaning cycles completed normally, but during the third, every cartridge icon showed a red X and the icons looked somewhat pixelated. I removed the cartridges and reinstalled them one at a time. They seem to be recognized until I install the sixth cartridge; then all six show red Xs. It happens regardless of which color I install last. After watching your cartridge troubleshooting video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJxvXdiPN5w&lc=UgxN9XgsBIMD5s-u1Gh4AaABAg], I'm wondering: is the CSIC board faulty?

Answer:

The CSIC board is a possibility, but I would not replace it based on the red Xs alone. The fact that the problem appears when the sixth cartridge is installed, regardless of its color, does not identify one particular cartridge slot. It may mean the printer cannot complete recognition of the full set. It is also possible that, once all cartridges are installed, the printer advances to another check and reports a different fault. That distinction matters because this began immediately after a printhead replacement and two successful cleaning cycles.

I would check the following in order:

  1. Confirm the exact printer error. Look at the printer's physical power, ink, and paper lights as well as the message in Epson Status Monitor. Note which lights are steady and which are flashing. On the Stylus Photo 1400, Epson distinguishes cartridge errors from some internal errors by the light pattern. Red Xs in the computer's cartridge display, especially when the icons themselves look unusual, are not enough to diagnose the CSIC board. files.support.epson.com

  2. Reseat the complete cartridge set. Use the printer's cartridge-change procedure, press each cartridge fully into place, and close the cartridge cover. If you have a known-good, compatible set of six cartridges, testing the complete set can help rule out a chip or cartridge compatibility problem. Seeing five cartridges displayed before the sixth is installed does not prove that those five, or the CSIC board, have passed every check. Epson's first recommendation for a cartridge error after installation is to verify that all cartridges are seated correctly. Epson US

  3. Inspect the CSIC contacts and cable. Turn the printer off and unplug it before inspecting internal connections. Look for bent or contaminated cartridge contact pins, ink or cleaning fluid around the CSIC board, and a CSIC ribbon cable that is crooked, loose, creased, or damaged. If you disconnect a flat cable, record its orientation first and reseat it carefully. A poor connection can produce symptoms similar to a failed board. Avoid further cleaning cycles while an electrical fault is suspected.

  4. Recheck the recent printhead installation. Since the trouble started after replacing the head, inspect the printhead ribbon cables and their connectors for incorrect seating, exposed or damaged traces, and any ink or moisture. A defective or shorted replacement head, damaged head cable, or mainboard fault remains possible. The two cleanings that completed successfully do not rule out a fault that appeared during the third. We have encountered a related Artisan 1430 case in which an apparent cartridge-recognition problem persisted after a CSIC replacement and was ultimately traced to a damaged printhead and FFC cable. That example is a reason to check these parts, not proof that the same parts have failed in your 1400. BCH Technologies

If you have access to a compatible diagnostic utility for the Stylus Photo 1400, check whether it can report the printer's current fault or useful service information. I would not assume that every version of an Adjustment Program stores a readable history of fatal errors. The immediate goal is to establish whether the printer is reporting a no-cartridge/CSIC error or an internal or fatal error before purchasing a board. If you find the exact Status Monitor message and physical light pattern, those will be more useful than the red Xs alone.

Printer repair issues often require hands-on examination, so we cannot provide individualized remote diagnosis or repair support. We do offer in-person evaluation and repair through our local printer repair service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. We work on a first-come, first-served basis, and high demand can mean waiting a few weeks for a drop-off. We provide instructions for submitting either a complete printer or specific parts, although we recognize that our rates may not be the most economical choice.

For self-help, you can search YouTube or visit the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. Use the search icon near "About" on the right side of the channel menu to look for "Stylus Photo 1400 CSIC," "all cartridges not recognized," and "printhead FFC." We receive many requests for particular videos, and after more than nine years of making them, searching is the quickest way to find the relevant one. YouTube may also suggest useful videos from other channels.

Thank you again for supporting our videos and for explaining what changed after the printhead replacement. I hope checking the reported error and the connections helps you avoid replacing a CSIC board unnecessarily.
