Epson ET-8550 DTF Printer Not Printing White After One Day: What to Check

Question:
I bought a converted Epson ET-8550 DTF printer from BCH Technologies for about $1,300. I printed roughly ten small items on the first day, but when I tried to print again about 12 hours later, neither white channel worked. I primed the white dampers and used DTF cleaning solution, but every other color prints on the nozzle check while white is completely absent. I can see the other colors at the capping station, but no white ink. I did not install the maintenance dampers because I expected to print again soon. What could have happened, and how can I restore the white channels?
Answer:
I understand why you left the white dampers installed when you expected to print again in 12 hours. White DTF ink can settle or lose flow sooner than expected, which is why we designed the maintenance dampers into this conversion and recommend installing them after each batch of work. Still, the timing alone does not prove that both printhead channels are clogged or establish why this happened. Air in the white lines, a restricted damper, a supply problem, or a poor capping-station seal could also prevent white ink from appearing.
Start by checking the white ink supply. Confirm that the white ink is properly mixed according to your printer's instructions, the supply is not empty, the lines are not pinched, and the white dampers remain filled. If either damper loses its prime again after you fill it, pay particular attention to its connections and the line feeding it. The fact that the other colors print is useful, but it does not rule out a problem specific to the two white channels. BCH Technologies
For a recent flow interruption, the next step is the park-and-prime procedure in your printer's manual:
- Turn on the printer and let the printhead park naturally on the capping station. Do not force the carriage into position.
- Attach the specified tube and syringe to the waste line. Pull back gently and watch for resistance and fluid movement. If the syringe draws only air with little resistance, check that the head is seated on the cap and that the syringe connection and capping-station seal are airtight. If the plunger will not move at all, stop and check for a blockage in the cap or waste path. Do not force it.
- If you obtain a steady draw, follow the volume and holding instructions for your particular conversion. Syringe markings show the total amount drawn; they do not, by themselves, tell you how much of that amount is ink. Watch what actually enters the tube and syringe.
- Run one regular cleaning cycle, then print a nozzle check to see whether either white channel has begun to return. Avoid repeated, back-to-back cleanings and do not jump straight to Power Cleaning.
A cap-side prime depends on a good seal and an open waste path. If those are compromised, pulling harder will not reliably draw ink through the white channels. Epson also notes that cleaning consumes ink and recommends a rest period when repeated normal cleanings do not improve a nozzle check. BCH Technologies
If white begins to appear, even partially, give the printer time to rest and recheck it before doing more cleaning. If there is still no white at all, switch to the maintenance-damper arrangement described in your conversion manual. Where your configuration permits it, our alternative approach is to move the maintenance setup into the two affected white-channel positions and place the other two maintenance dampers in the positions vacated by the color dampers. Follow the manual's channel map closely so each damper returns to its correct location before you print again. Park and prime as instructed, then allow the installed maintenance system time to work over the next few days. In our experience, the fluid used in the color-side maintenance setup can sometimes help loosen white-ink residue, but recovery is not guaranteed.
Please do not assume that an automatic white-ink mixer or circulation pump has cleared the printhead: circulating ink in the supply system and restoring flow through blocked nozzles are different things. Also, do not force cleaning solution backward through an installed printhead or continue pulling against a hard blockage. BCH's ET-8550 conversion materials describe separate functions for film control and white-ink management, so the exact maintenance procedure should follow the hardware and manual supplied with your printer. Because this printer worked for only one day, please keep your first nozzle check, the current nozzle check, and a record of what you tried, along with your order information. Those details will be useful if the white channels remain completely absent after the prescribed maintenance procedure.
Printer problems can be difficult to assess without examining the machine in person, so we cannot provide individualized remote troubleshooting or repair support. We do offer in-person evaluation and repair through our printer repair service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Appointments are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before a drop-off is available. We can evaluate a complete printer or specific parts, with instructions for how to proceed, although our repair rates may not be the most economical option.
Online self-help may be useful in the meantime. You can search YouTube or visit the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. On our channel's homepage, use the search icon near "About" to look for terms such as "ET-8550 park and prime," "maintenance dampers," or "white ink not printing." We have made videos for more than nine years, so searching is the most reliable way to find the relevant one; YouTube may also show helpful videos from other creators.
Thank you again for reaching out and for explaining exactly what happened. I'm sorry your printing was interrupted so soon after purchase, and I hope these checks help you identify where the white-ink flow stopped.
