Epson Error 031006 Is Gone, but the Printer Still Prints Blank Pages: What to Check

Question:

My Epson printer showed error 031006 with the E-01 "Non-printing features are available" message. After I cleaned the printhead ribbon cable, the error disappeared, but the printer now prints completely blank pages. I replaced the printhead, and the pages are still blank. I have ordered a replacement ribbon cable from BCH Technologies. If the new cable does not solve the problem, what else could be wrong? I originally asked about this on the BCH Technologies video about error 031006 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23SxDLKOqdY&lc=Ugwhw9o1gbeq-8NmKWB4AaABAg].

Answer:

The fact that cleaning the ribbon cable made 031006 disappear is useful, but it does not prove that the cable was the only fault. Its contacts can look clean and silver while an internal conductor is cracked, a connection is loose, or a connector is damaged. The replacement cable you ordered is a reasonable next part to inspect and try. Make sure it matches your printer model and is installed in the correct orientation, fully seated, and straight at both ends. Turn off and unplug the printer before touching or reseating any cable. Inspect the connectors for bent contacts, dark marks, or dried ink as well.

Before opening the printer again, print a nozzle check from the printer's own controls, if your model provides that option. If the nozzle check prints a pattern but documents from a computer come out blank, look at the print job, driver, and settings. If the nozzle check itself is completely blank, the problem is within the printer's ink delivery or printhead firing system. Epson uses the nozzle check to distinguish printer output problems from issues with a computer-sent job.

Next, check whether ink is reaching the replacement printhead. Verify the ink supply and inspect any accessible tubing or dampers for an obvious interruption or large air gap. A newly installed head may need priming, and a capping or pump problem can prevent ink from reaching it. If ink is not reaching the head, replacing the cable or another head will not resolve the blank pages. Avoid running repeated cleaning or power-cleaning cycles without a reason: they consume ink, and the appropriate procedure depends on the printer model.

If the nozzle check remains completely blank after the new cable is correctly installed and ink delivery is confirmed, I would investigate the mainboard's printhead circuit. Depending on the model, that includes protection fuses labeled F1, F2, F301, or something else, as well as the circuitry that drives the head. An open fuse can leave a printer able to move paper while no ink is fired. Some boards use a printhead driver IC identified as 041B, but I would not assume your printer has that exact component without its model and board identification. A failed driver, damaged connector, or broken board trace is also possible.

A technician can test the relevant fuses for continuity with the printer unplugged and inspect the board for damage. A blown fuse should not simply be bridged or replaced without finding what caused it to open; the same fault could damage the replacement fuse, board, or printhead. Live voltage and firing-signal tests require the correct service information and electrical repair experience. Because you have already replaced one printhead, I would pause before installing another until the cable and board have been checked.

In short, the new ribbon cable may restore printing if a conductor or connection is faulty. If it does not, the most useful next result is the printer's exact model and whether its own nozzle check is completely blank. That will help distinguish an ink-supply problem from a fuse or printhead-drive fault without assuming that error 031006 identifies one failed part.

Printer problems often require hands-on inspection, so we cannot provide individualized remote troubleshooting or repair support. We offer in-person evaluation and repair through our printer repair service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Work is handled first come, first served, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept a printer for drop-off. The service page explains how to submit a whole printer or a specific part. We also understand that our repair rates may not be the most economical option, so we encourage you to research self-help resources. On the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies], use the search icon near "About" to look for your model, 031006, ribbon cable, or blank-page printing. We have made videos for many years and receive dozens of video requests each day, so searching the channel is more reliable than asking us to recall a particular video. YouTube may also suggest useful videos from other creators.

Thank you again for supporting BCH Technologies and for sharing what you have already tried. I hope the new cable resolves the issue, and that the nozzle check helps you decide where to look next.
