Question
I have an Epson L850 printer, but my computer is not detecting it. I have already tried several possible solutions, but I am still facing the same problem. I am located in Nigeria and would like help. I am willing to pay if repair or consultation is necessary. What should I check next?
Answer
If your Epson L850 is not being detected by the computer, the problem can come from several different areas: the USB cable, the USB port on the computer, the printer driver, Windows settings, the printer's USB socket, the formatter/mainboard, or another communication-related board issue. Since your question was posted under a video about an Epson no-power/mainboard repair, it is also worth mentioning that a printer can power on normally but still have a damaged communication section on the board.
The first thing to check is the USB cable. Many printer detection problems are caused by a bad or charge-only USB cable. A cable can look fine from the outside but still fail to transfer data properly. Try using a known-good USB printer cable, preferably one that has already worked with another printer. Avoid using a very long cable or a cable connected through an extension, USB hub, or adapter. Connect the printer directly to the computer.
Next, try a different USB port on the computer. If you are using a desktop computer, try the USB ports on the back of the computer instead of the front panel ports. Front USB ports sometimes have weaker connections or internal cable problems. If possible, test both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Some older printers communicate more reliably through USB 2.0 ports.
Then, test the printer on a different computer. This step is very important because it helps separate a printer problem from a computer problem. If the Epson L850 is detected on another computer, then the printer's USB communication is probably working, and the problem is more likely with the original computer's driver, Windows configuration, USB controller, or printer software. If the printer is not detected on any computer, then the issue is more likely inside the printer or with the USB connection hardware.
On the computer side, reinstall the Epson L850 driver. Do not only remove the printer icon. Fully uninstall the Epson printer software, restart the computer, and then install the correct Epson L850 driver again. During installation, do not connect the USB cable until the installer asks you to connect the printer. Some Epson drivers need the printer to be connected at the correct stage of the setup process.
You should also check whether the printer appears in Windows Device Manager. On Windows, open Device Manager and look under "Printers," "Print queues," "Universal Serial Bus controllers," or "Other devices." If the printer appears with a yellow warning sign, the computer may be seeing the printer but does not have the correct driver installed. If it appears as an unknown USB device, the USB communication may be unstable, the cable may be bad, or the printer's USB circuit may not be responding correctly. If nothing appears at all when you plug and unplug the USB cable, the computer may not be receiving any USB signal from the printer.
Also check "Printers & Scanners" in Windows settings. Sometimes the printer is detected but is not selected as the active printer. Remove old duplicate Epson L850 printer icons, restart the computer, and reinstall the printer cleanly. If you have many old Epson drivers installed, they can sometimes interfere with the new installation.
If the printer powers on and works mechanically but is not detected by any computer, then you may have a hardware issue. The possible hardware causes include a damaged USB port on the printer, a broken solder joint where the USB socket connects to the board, a damaged USB data line, a bad formatter/mainboard, or damage caused by a power surge, static electricity, liquid exposure, or incorrect cable connection.
The Epson L850 uses internal electronics to communicate with the computer. If the USB port or communication circuit on the mainboard is damaged, the printer may still power on, move the carriage, initialize, or even show normal lights, but the computer will not recognize it. In that case, reinstalling the driver will not solve the issue because the computer is not receiving proper data from the printer.
If you recently had a power problem, a no-power repair, or a board-level issue, then the mainboard should be inspected carefully. A failed transistor, MOSFET, voltage regulator, fuse, USB protection component, or communication IC can affect printer behavior. However, board-level repair requires testing with tools such as a multimeter and, in some cases, soldering equipment. I would not recommend replacing random parts without diagnosis because it can make the board worse.
For the Epson L850 specifically, also check whether the printer can perform standalone functions. For example, if the printer has a display or menu functions, see whether it can operate independently without the computer. If the printer can copy, print a nozzle check, or move through its menu normally, that tells us the printer is at least partially functional. But if the computer still cannot detect it through USB, the problem is most likely limited to communication, driver, or USB hardware.
If the printer shows an error code or flashing light pattern, that information is very important. In your message, no specific Epson error code was mentioned. If you see any code on the screen or a particular blinking pattern, write it down exactly. Epson errors can point toward waste ink, scanner, carriage, paper feed, ink system, or mainboard issues. Without a specific code, the best troubleshooting path is to isolate the USB cable, computer port, driver, and then the printer's USB/mainboard hardware.
Here is the order I would follow:
First, try a known-good USB printer cable. Second, plug directly into a different USB port. Third, test on another computer. Fourth, uninstall and reinstall the correct Epson L850 driver. Fifth, check Device Manager and Printers & Scanners. Sixth, inspect the printer's USB port for looseness, damage, or broken contact. Finally, if none of those steps work, consider mainboard or formatter board diagnosis.
Since you mentioned that you are willing to pay if necessary, paid repair or consultation may be needed depending on what you find during these tests. If the printer is not detected by multiple computers using multiple known-good USB cables, then the chance of a printer-side hardware issue becomes much higher.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair because many of these problems require hands-on testing. Because of that, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting, repair suggestions, or direct support for individual printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility, BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks before we can accept a printer drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either a complete printer or specific printer parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we understand that our rates may not be the most economical option for everyone. For that reason, we strongly recommend self-help through online research. A good place to start is YouTube or our YouTube channel homepage, BCH Technologies on YouTube [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. Use the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar to look for videos related to your exact printer problem. I receive dozens of questions every day asking where to find videos on specific topics. Since we have created videos for more than nine years, it is difficult to remember every single one, so YouTube's search function is usually the fastest way to find the right topic. YouTube may also recommend helpful videos from other channels that can assist you.
Thank you again for contacting us and for supporting our channel. I hope these steps help you narrow down whether the problem is a simple USB or driver issue, or whether the Epson L850 needs board-level inspection or repair.
