Question
My Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is showing error codes 000043 and 000031. The capping station does not seem to shift or lower correctly, which prevents the printhead carriage from moving or seating properly, and the drive belt also appears loose. What should I check to determine whether the problem is coming from the paper-feed drive, capping station gears, encoder system, carriage mechanism, or belt?
Answer
There are several things happening here that are worth separating. Error code 000043 primarily concerns the PF, or paper-feed, drive system, while error code 000031 concerns excessive load detected during carriage positioning. A malfunctioning capping station can potentially connect the two problems because the ET-8550 uses the PF drive system to operate part of the ink-system and capping mechanism. If that mechanism does not release correctly, the carriage can then encounter excessive resistance when it tries to move.
What Epson Error Code 000043 Means
On the ET-8550, 000043 is a PF PID reverse error. In simple terms, the printer commanded the paper-feed mechanism to move in one direction, but the feedback from the PF encoder did not correspond to what the mainboard expected.
That does not automatically mean the PF encoder itself is bad.
The ET-8550 service information lists several possible causes, including:
-
An obstruction or excessive load in the paper-feed mechanism
-
Gears in the PF drivetrain that have disengaged
-
Broken or damaged gear teeth
-
A dirty or contaminated PF encoder scale
-
A damaged, skewed, loose, or poorly connected PF encoder FFC
-
A defective PF encoder
-
A mainboard problem
Therefore, 000043 should be treated as a PF drive/feedback problem rather than as a failure of one specific sensor.
In your situation, the fact that the capping station is not lowering makes the mechanical PF drive especially important to inspect.
What Epson Error Code 000031 Means
Error 000031 is a CR load-position excess-load error. CR refers to the carriage mechanism that moves the printhead from side to side.
This error means the printer attempted to position the carriage but detected too much resistance or otherwise could not complete the expected movement.
Possible causes include:
-
Something physically obstructing the carriage
-
Excessive mechanical resistance
-
The carriage interfering with the ink-system or capping mechanism
-
A gear becoming disengaged or damaged
-
A loose, frayed, jumping, or disengaged carriage timing belt
-
Contamination of the CR encoder strip/scale
-
A partially failing carriage motor
-
A mainboard problem
Epson's ET-8500/ET-8550 service information specifically includes interference with the ink system, damaged or disengaged gears, and carriage timing-belt problems among the possible causes of 000031.
Therefore, the loose belt you observed is significant. If you are referring to the long carriage timing belt that moves the printhead from left to right, inspect its tension, teeth, attachment to the carriage, and whether it has jumped or is riding incorrectly on either pulley.
However, I would not assume the belt is the only problem. If the capping station is still raised and physically holding or interfering with the carriage, fixing the belt alone may not resolve the underlying condition.
How the ET-8550 Capping Station Gets Its Drive
This is where the mechanical relationship becomes important.
The ET-8550 capping station does not have a completely independent motor for raising and lowering the cap. The ink-system mechanism receives drive from the PF motor and PF roller/shaft, sometimes casually referred to as the PF rod.
The PF motor's force is routed through a selector/change mechanism. When the mechanism is placed into the ink-system drive position, power can be transmitted through the gear train to the capping station.
According to the ET-8550 operating principle, the drive path ultimately involves the PF roller, selector/change mechanism, Spur Gear DE, Pump-Drive Compound Gear, clutch/intermittent gear, and Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam. Rotation of that cam controls several functions, including raising and lowering the cap and wiper and engaging or releasing the carriage lock.
This means that when the cap refuses to lower, you can troubleshoot the mechanism by following the power path backward.
1. Start With the PF Roller/Shaft
With the printer powered off and unplugged, determine whether the PF roller/shaft can rotate mechanically without an obvious hard lock.
Do not force it.
If the PF shaft itself cannot move, investigate the PF mechanism first for:
-
Jammed paper or foreign objects
-
A seized roller
-
A jammed duplexer or paper-feed component
-
Broken or displaced gears
-
A mechanism that is improperly assembled
-
Something physically preventing the capping station or another PF-driven component from completing its movement
If the PF shaft moves but the capping station does nothing, continue tracing the drive downstream.
2. Inspect the PF Drive Gears for Sideways Movement or Lost Engagement
A gear does not necessarily have to lose teeth to stop transferring power.
Check whether any PF drive gear has shifted sideways on its shaft. If two gears are no longer aligned laterally, one gear may turn normally while barely touching-or completely missing-the next gear.
This can make the PF mechanism appear functional while the capping station receives no useful drive.
Pay particular attention to the drive-transfer area near the change/selector mechanism.
3. Check the Change Slider and Change/Selector Mechanism
The PF drive is used for several different functions in the ET-8550, so Epson uses a mechanical selector system to determine where PF motor power is sent.
The position of the carriage is involved in changing this mechanism.
When the carriage moves into the appropriate parking/home position, it interacts with the change slider. The slider then changes the position of the selector gears so that PF motor force can be routed toward the ink-system mechanism.
This is why simply rotating the PF shaft does not necessarily make the capping station move. If the selector is in the wrong position, the PF motor's force may be routed somewhere else.
Inspect the change slider carefully and make sure:
-
It can move through its normal travel.
-
It is not jammed by dried ink, debris, or a displaced component.
-
Its spring is present and correctly positioned.
-
The carriage can contact the slider correctly.
-
The selector gear can move laterally rather than being frozen on its shaft.
-
The related gear teeth are intact.
4. Inspect Spur Gear DE
One particularly important component is Spur Gear DE, which is associated with the change/selector mechanism.
The gear needs to reach the correct lateral position to transmit PF drive into the ink-system gear train.
If Spur Gear DE cannot slide into its proper position because of:
-
A jammed change slider
-
A displaced spring
-
Dried ink or contamination
-
Shaft damage
-
Incorrect reassembly
-
A cracked gear
-
Excessive side-to-side movement
then the PF shaft can rotate while the capping station remains stationary.
Watch the selector mechanism while operating it manually-with the printer unplugged-to determine whether the gear is actually moving into engagement rather than merely rotating nearby.
5. Follow the Drive Into the Pump-Drive Compound Gear
Once Spur Gear DE engages correctly, the drive should continue into the Pump-Drive Compound Gear.
From there, the mechanism operates the pump and transfers movement through the clutch/intermittent gear arrangement to the Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam.
If Spur Gear DE turns but the Pump-Drive Compound Gear does not, inspect the engagement between those two parts.
Look for:
-
Cracked gear hubs
-
Missing teeth
-
Gears that have shifted laterally
-
Incorrect shaft positioning
-
Excessive play
-
Binding caused by dried ink or contamination
6. Inspect the Clutch and Intermittent Gear
The clutch/intermittent mechanism is another important part of the system.
The capping station does not simply rotate continuously whenever the PF motor runs. Epson uses the clutch and intermittent gear system to control when movement is transmitted to the cap/wiper cam.
Therefore, you may find a situation where the pump-drive gear turns but the capping station still does not move.
If that happens, inspect the clutch gear and intermittent gear next.
A gear can look intact but still fail because it is not moving into the correct position at the correct point in the cycle.
7. Check the Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam
The Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam converts rotational gear movement into the mechanical movement that raises and lowers the cap and wiper assembly.
According to Epson's operating description, movement of this cam controls the cap, wiper, carriage lock, and venting mechanism.
Therefore, if the drivetrain reaches this cam but the cap remains raised, inspect:
-
The cam itself
-
The cap drive lever
-
Wiper drive components
-
Carriage-lock mechanism
-
Springs and pivots
-
Ink buildup around moving parts
-
Broken or displaced plastic tabs
The capping station should move smoothly through its complete range. If one lever is jammed, the PF motor may encounter excessive resistance and trigger a PF-related error.
Why the Capping Station Can Cause Error 000031
This also explains why 000031 may appear along with the capping-station problem.
When the printer starts, it expects the ink-system mechanism to release the carriage before the carriage begins its normal initialization movement.
If the cap or carriage lock remains raised, the printhead carriage may try to move while it is still mechanically restrained.
The printer then sees excessive carriage load and can report 000031.
Therefore, when troubleshooting 000031 in this particular situation, I would not immediately replace the carriage motor or mainboard. First determine whether the carriage can actually be mechanically released from the ink-system/capping mechanism.
Do not pull the carriage forcibly away from the capping station. The carriage lock and cap mechanism should release correctly through their normal mechanical operation.
Check the Loose Carriage Belt
If the belt you mentioned is the CR carriage timing belt, it also needs attention.
Check whether the belt:
-
Has normal tension
-
Is attached securely to the carriage
-
Is correctly positioned around both pulleys
-
Has damaged or missing teeth
-
Is frayed
-
Has jumped on a pulley
-
Has excessive slack
A loose or jumping carriage belt can contribute directly to error 000031, because the carriage motor can turn without producing the position change expected by the encoder system. Epson specifically lists looseness, fraying, or disengagement of the carriage timing belt among the possible causes associated with this error.
If you are referring to a belt in the PF drive rather than the carriage belt, then the same general principle applies: inspect it for slipping, lost tension, damaged teeth, and incorrect routing because PF drivetrain problems are directly relevant to 000043.
Check Both Encoder Systems Before Replacing Electronics
Because you have both 000043 and 000031, there are two encoder systems worth keeping separate.
For 000043, inspect the PF encoder system:
-
PF encoder scale
-
PF encoder sensor
-
PF encoder FFC
-
Connectors
-
Mechanical rotation of the PF system
For 000031, inspect the CR/carriage encoder system:
-
CR encoder strip/scale
-
CR encoder sensor
-
CR encoder FFC
-
Carriage belt
-
Carriage movement and mechanical load
Clean encoder scales carefully if they are contaminated, but avoid scratching them or removing their markings.
I would generally investigate the mechanical drive and encoder connections before assuming the mainboard has failed. A mainboard failure is possible for both errors, but it should normally be considered after the obvious mechanical loads, gears, belts, encoders, and FFC connections have been checked.
A Practical Troubleshooting Order
For your specific combination of symptoms, I would approach the printer in this order:
-
Confirm that the PF shaft/roller can rotate and is not mechanically locked.
-
Inspect the PF drivetrain for displaced, cracked, or disengaged gears.
-
Check the change slider and its spring.
-
Confirm that Spur Gear DE moves into the proper engagement position.
-
Follow the drive into the Pump-Drive Compound Gear.
-
Check the clutch/intermittent gear mechanism.
-
Confirm that the Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam can lower the capping station and release the carriage lock.
-
Verify that the carriage can move smoothly once the capping mechanism has released.
-
Inspect the loose carriage timing belt for tension, fraying, jumping, or disengagement.
-
Inspect and clean the CR encoder strip and check its FFC.
-
Inspect the PF encoder scale, sensor, and FFC for the 000043 error.
-
Only after those mechanical and sensor-related checks should PF motor, CR motor, or mainboard failure move higher on the list.
The important point is to follow the mechanical drive path rather than replacing parts based only on the error number. If the PF shaft turns, determine whether its force reaches Spur Gear DE. If that gear moves, see whether it drives the Pump-Drive Compound Gear. Then follow the movement through the clutch and Wiper/Cap-Drive Cam until you find the first component that fails to move.
That first point where motion is lost is usually much more useful diagnostically than the error code alone.
Addressing printer problems can be complicated because so much of the diagnosis depends on physically observing the machine. For that reason, we're not able to provide ongoing remote troubleshooting, repair guidance, or individualized technical support for printer repairs. We do offer in-person evaluation and repair through our printer diagnostic and repair facility [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Because demand is high, the service operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take several weeks before an opening is available for a printer drop-off. Our repair services can cover either the complete printer or certain individual parts, with instructions provided on the service page. We also recognize that professional repair is not always the most economical option, so we strongly encourage self-help and online research where appropriate. You can begin with YouTube or visit the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. On our channel homepage, use the search icon near the "About" section to search for your printer model, error code, or specific mechanism. We receive dozens of questions every day asking whether we have a video covering a particular repair. Since we have created repair videos for more than nine years, it is difficult to remember every video we have published. Using YouTube's channel search is usually the fastest way to locate the relevant material, and YouTube may also recommend useful videos from other repair channels.
Thank you again for contacting BCH Technologies and for supporting our work. We appreciate you taking the time to describe the symptoms in detail, and we hope this information helps you better understand how errors 000043 and 000031, the PF drive, carriage system, and ET-8550 capping-station mechanism can relate to one another.
