Question
I have an Epson ET-3600 displaying the message that the printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life. I was looking at your video, "Printer Says Ink Pad Full? Try This Simple Trick!", because I would like to reset or address the ink pad issue. However, my computer does not recognize the ET-3600 through the USB connection. I have already tried installing the printer drivers, but the printer still is not detected by USB. What should I check, and how can I resolve the ink pad error if the computer cannot communicate with the printer?
Answer
There are actually two issues to consider with your ET-3600: the ink pad end-of-service-life message and the computer not recognizing the printer through USB. They may appear at the same time, but I would not automatically assume that they have the same cause.
What Does "Ink Pad Is at the End of Its Service Life" Mean?
On the Epson ET-3600, the waste ink pads collect ink discharged during printhead cleaning, ink charging, and other maintenance operations. Epson keeps an internal estimate of how much waste ink has been sent to these pads.
Once the calculated service limit is reached, the ET-3600 can display:
"A printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life."
According to Epson's ET-3600 documentation, when this message reaches the end-of-life stage, Epson instructs the user to turn off the printer and have the ink pad serviced.
This particular message is a service-life warning rather than a numbered error code such as 031006, 000021, or similar codes found on some other Epson printers.
There are also two different conditions to distinguish:
-
Ink pad nearing the end of its service life: the printer may temporarily allow continued operation.
-
Ink pad at the end of its service life: the printer normally stops printing until the waste-ink system is serviced and the appropriate counter is addressed.
Resetting the Counter Is Only Part of the Repair
A waste-ink reset changes the printer's internal counter. It does not physically remove the waste ink already collected inside the printer.
That distinction is important.
If the pads are genuinely saturated and the counter is simply reset repeatedly, ink can eventually overflow into the bottom of the printer. For a proper repair, the physical waste-ink condition should be inspected and addressed along with the counter.
Depending on how the printer is being serviced, this can involve replacing or servicing the waste pads or making another properly engineered waste-ink arrangement. Epson officially describes the ET-3600's internal ink pads as service components rather than user-replaceable consumables.
Why Doesn't the Computer Recognize the ET-3600 Through USB?
This is the first problem I would solve, especially if the reset software you intend to use requires a direct USB connection.
Installing the driver repeatedly will not necessarily help if Windows or macOS cannot detect the printer electrically in the first place.
The most useful first question is:
Does anything happen on the computer when you plug and unplug the ET-3600's USB cable?
For example, on Windows, check Device Manager while connecting and disconnecting the printer. If a device appears and disappears, even as an Unknown USB Device, then the computer is at least detecting something from the printer.
If absolutely nothing changes, concentrate first on the cable, USB port, and printer electronics.
1. Try a Different USB Printer Cable
The ET-3600 uses a conventional USB printer connection. Try a known-good cable rather than assuming the current cable is functional.
A cable may still look perfect externally while having a broken conductor internally.
Epson also recommends trying another USB cable when a printer's USB connection is not recognized.
2. Connect Directly to the Computer
Avoid:
-
USB hubs
-
docking stations
-
monitor USB ports
-
extension cables
-
questionable USB adapters
Connect the ET-3600 directly to a USB port on the computer.
If you have a desktop computer, I would also try one of the motherboard USB ports on the rear of the computer rather than a front-panel port.
3. Try Another USB Port
Try several USB ports.
If the computer has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.x ports, it is worth testing both types.
A damaged or unreliable computer USB port can easily be mistaken for a printer problem.
4. Test the Printer on Another Computer
This is one of the fastest ways to separate a software problem from a printer hardware problem.
Connect the ET-3600 with a known-good cable to another Windows or Mac computer.
If neither computer detects the printer, the probability of a problem inside the ET-3600 becomes considerably higher.
If the second computer recognizes it immediately, focus on the drivers, USB configuration, or operating system of the original computer.
5. Install the Epson Software in the Correct Order
If Windows does detect the printer but the Epson installer does not complete correctly, disconnect the USB cable first.
Then remove incomplete or duplicate ET-3600 installations if necessary, restart the computer, and run the Epson installation package again.
For the ET-3600, Epson's original setup procedure specifically instructs users to start the installation with the printer not connected to the computer and then follow the installation program's instructions for the selected connection method.
Do not connect the USB cable prematurely unless the installer asks for it.
6. Check Windows Device Manager
If you are using Windows, open Device Manager and watch the following sections while plugging the ET-3600 in:
-
Printers
-
Print queues
-
Universal Serial Bus controllers
-
Other devices
If you see something such as:
Unknown USB Device
or a device with a warning symbol, remove that device, unplug the printer, restart Windows, and reinstall the appropriate Epson software before reconnecting it.
If Windows detects the device correctly but your reset program cannot find the printer, that becomes a different issue. The software itself may not support the ET-3600, may be looking at the wrong USB instance, or may require the printer to be connected in a specific state.
7. Inspect the ET-3600 USB Port
Physically inspect the USB-B connector on the printer.
Look for:
-
A loose connector
-
Bent or damaged internal contacts
-
A connector that moves when the cable is inserted
-
Corrosion or contamination
-
Evidence that the connector has separated from the circuit board
If moving the USB cable causes Windows to connect and disconnect repeatedly, I would especially suspect the printer's USB connector or its solder joints.
8. Consider a Mainboard Communication Problem
If you have:
-
Tried multiple known-good USB cables
-
Tried multiple computer USB ports
-
Tried another computer
-
Installed the correct software
-
Confirmed that absolutely no USB device appears
then the problem may be on the ET-3600's mainboard rather than with the driver.
The USB connector itself can fail, but the circuitry responsible for USB communication can also be damaged.
At that stage, installing additional drivers is unlikely to solve the problem.
Can the ET-3600 Be Connected Without USB?
Yes. The ET-3600 supports more than one connection method, including USB, wireless networking, and wired Ethernet. Epson's setup documentation lists direct USB, wireless, and wired network connections.
Therefore, if your purpose is simply to determine whether the printer's network electronics still work, you can attempt to put the printer on your network.
However, there is an important limitation:
A network connection does not automatically solve the waste-ink service message.
Additionally, some service or reset utilities require a direct USB connection and will not communicate with the printer over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. That depends on the particular software being used.
So network connectivity can be useful for diagnosing the printer, but it may not substitute for USB when performing a service-counter operation.
Does the Ink Pad Error Cause the USB Port to Stop Working?
I would not assume that it does.
The ink-pad service-life condition normally stops printing because the waste-ink counter has reached its programmed limit. It is not, by itself, proof that the physical USB interface has failed.
Therefore, if the computer cannot detect any USB device whatsoever, I would troubleshoot that as a separate communication problem.
There is a useful distinction here:
Computer detects the ET-3600, but reset software cannot communicate: likely software, driver, port-selection, compatibility, or service-tool issue.
Computer does not detect any USB device from the ET-3600: start with the cable and computer ports, then investigate the printer's USB connector and mainboard.
What I Would Check First
For your particular ET-3600, I would proceed in this order:
-
Try another known-good USB printer cable.
-
Plug the printer directly into another USB port without a hub.
-
Watch Windows Device Manager while connecting and disconnecting the printer.
-
Test the ET-3600 on another computer.
-
If the computer recognizes it, reinstall the Epson software with the USB cable disconnected until the installer requests it.
-
If Windows recognizes the printer but your waste-ink/reset software does not, verify that the software specifically supports the Epson ET-3600 and the operating system you are using.
-
If no computer can detect the printer with several known-good cables, inspect the printer's USB socket and consider a mainboard-level USB problem.
-
Once communication is restored, address both the physical waste-ink condition and the waste-ink counter, rather than resetting the counter alone.
The fact that the ink-pad message and USB problem occurred at the same time can make them appear to be one fault, but troubleshooting them separately will usually make the diagnosis much easier.
Addressing printer issues can be complicated because so much of the diagnosis depends on hands-on testing and observing the printer directly. For that reason, we're not able to provide individual remote troubleshooting, repair guidance, or ongoing technical support for printer repairs.
We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our BCH Technologies printer diagnostic and repair facility [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Because of the volume of repair requests we receive, service is handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and there may be a wait of several weeks before a printer can be scheduled for drop-off. Our services are structured for either complete-printer evaluation or repair of certain individual components, and the service page explains how to proceed. We also recognize that professional repair may not be the most economical option for every printer.
For that reason, we strongly encourage self-help and online research whenever practical. A good place to begin is YouTube and our BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. On our channel homepage, use the search icon located near the About section to search for the exact printer model, error message, component, or repair topic you need. We have produced repair videos for more than nine years, and with such a large library it is difficult to remember the location of every individual video. YouTube's search feature is generally the fastest way to locate applicable material, and it may also recommend useful videos from other repair channels.
Thank you again for contacting BCH Technologies and for supporting our videos. We appreciate you taking the time to share the details of your ET-3600 problem, and we hope this information gives you a clearer path for separating the USB communication issue from the ink-pad service-life condition.
