Question
I was working on my Epson ET-8550 while following the ET-8550 Ink Tank Removal & Cleaning: Expert Tips for Guaranteed Results - ET-8500, L8160, L8180 video. When I lifted the lid, one of the cables became disconnected. How can I reconnect it?
Answer
If a cable became disconnected when you lifted the upper section of your Epson ET-8550, the first thing I recommend is not powering the printer on until you have identified the cable and confirmed that it is installed correctly. The ET-8550 contains several flat flexible cables, commonly called FFC or ribbon cables, as well as conventional wire harnesses. Some of these connect components in the upper printer assembly to the mainboard.
The exact reconnection procedure depends on which cable came loose.
Check Whether It Is a Ribbon Cable or Wire Connector
If the disconnected cable is a thin, flat ribbon cable with exposed metal contacts at the end, it normally fits into an FFC/FPC connector on the mainboard or another circuit board.
These connectors often have a small locking mechanism. Depending on the connector design, the locking bar may flip upward, slide outward slightly, or otherwise release before the ribbon cable is inserted.
Do not simply push the ribbon cable into a locked connector. Doing so can bend the cable, damage its conductive contacts, or break the connector.
Before reconnecting it:
-
Unplug the printer from the wall.
-
Identify exactly where the cable originated.
-
Inspect the cable end for folded, torn, burned, or damaged contacts.
-
Inspect the connector for a broken or missing locking tab.
-
Make sure the cable contacts face the correct direction.
-
Insert the ribbon cable straight and evenly.
-
Make sure it reaches approximately the same depth across its entire width.
-
Secure the connector lock after the cable is fully seated.
One side of many ribbon cables has exposed conductive contacts while the opposite side has an insulating backing. Installing the cable backward can prevent the circuit from working and, depending on the circuit involved, could potentially cause electrical damage.
If the Cable Goes to the ET-8550 Mainboard
If the cable disappeared into the lower printer chassis or appears to connect near the mainboard, I recommend searching YouTube specifically for "Epson ET-8550 mainboard removal," "ET-8550 mainboard installation," or "ET-8550 mainboard replacement."
Mainboard installation and removal videos are often more useful for this problem than an ink-tank removal video because they show the locations and orientations of the individual ribbon cables and wiring harnesses.
You can search directly from our BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. On the channel homepage, use the search icon near the channel navigation menu and enter terms such as:

The ET-8500, L8160, and L8180 share many design characteristics with the ET-8550, so videos covering those models may also provide useful visual references. However, always compare the actual connector and cable routing on your printer before assuming they are identical.
Be Especially Careful With the Mainboard Connectors
One important concern is that the small ribbon-cable connectors on Epson mainboards can be relatively fragile. If the cable was pulled out while its connector was still locked, inspect both parts carefully.
If the connector's locking bar has come off, do not assume that placing the ribbon cable loosely into the socket will create a reliable connection. The lock helps maintain both cable alignment and electrical contact.
Also look closely at the ribbon cable itself. If the end has become creased, split, delaminated, or scraped deeply enough to expose or remove one of its conductive traces, reconnecting it may not solve the problem. The cable could require replacement.
Take Photos Before Disconnecting Anything Else
Before continuing the disassembly, I strongly recommend taking several clear photographs of the printer from different angles. Pay particular attention to:
-
Ribbon cable orientation
-
Which side of the cable's contacts faces the connector
-
Cable routing
-
Wire colors and connector positions
-
Tape, clips, and cable guides
-
The position of every connector on the mainboard
This can save a great deal of confusion during reassembly. Epson printers may have several cables positioned close together that appear similar at first glance.
If you can locate a teardown or mainboard installation video, compare your printer with the video frame-by-frame around the point where that particular cable is connected. This is generally the safest way to determine both its location and orientation.
Do Not Guess Based Only on Cable Length
It can be tempting to reconnect a loose cable to whichever nearby socket it appears to reach. I would avoid doing this. Cable length alone is not reliable enough to identify the correct connector.
Connecting an FFC to the wrong socket, reversing its orientation, or inserting it at an angle can potentially cause a short circuit or damage the mainboard or the component connected to it.
There was no specific printer error code mentioned in your question, so there is not an error code I can reliably use to identify which circuit has been disconnected. If an error appears after reassembly, record the complete error number before doing additional troubleshooting. Epson codes such as 000021, 000031, 031006, 100016, and others point to very different systems, so the exact code matters considerably.
If the printer has not been powered on since the cable disconnected, that is preferable. Identify and reconnect the cable correctly before applying power again.
Addressing printer problems can be complicated because many diagnoses and repairs depend on physically inspecting the machine. For that reason, we're not able to provide ongoing remote troubleshooting, repair guidance, or individualized repair support. We do offer in-person evaluation and repair through our printer diagnostic and repair facility [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Because demand is high, service is handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and there may be a waiting period of several weeks before a printer can be scheduled for drop-off. Our services cover both complete printers and certain individual parts, with instructions on the service page explaining how to proceed. We also recognize that professional repair is not always the most economical option, so we strongly encourage self-help through online research whenever appropriate. A good starting point is YouTube and our BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. On our channel homepage, use the search icon near the "About" area to search for your specific printer model, error, component, or repair topic. We receive dozens of questions every day asking us to locate particular videos, and after producing videos for more than nine years, it is difficult to remember every video individually. YouTube's search function is therefore usually the quickest way to find the relevant material, and it may also recommend useful repair videos from other creators.
Thank you again for contacting BCH Technologies and for supporting our YouTube channel. We sincerely appreciate your engagement, and I hope the information above gives you a safer direction for identifying and reconnecting the cable before powering the ET-8550 back on.
