Question:
On an Epson ET-8550, the gear on the Cassette 2 pickup rod does not turn when I move it before removing the assembly. No gear teeth appear to be missing, and nothing else looks broken. What should I check?

Thank you for contacting BCH Technologies, and please accept our apologies that we could not answer sooner. We know printer problems are often urgent, but we want to give each question careful thought and provide a detailed answer. Do not force the gear by hand. The ET-8550 Cassette 2 feed train may not freewheel while the assembly is installed, so a gear that resists manual rotation is not automatically broken. The useful check is whether the pickup system moves during an actual Cassette 2 feed attempt. Keep hands, tools, and loose clothing away from moving parts while observing it.
If the main rod does not turn during the pickup phase, the problem is likely upstream of that rod. Possible causes include a drive coupling that is not engaged, a binding linkage, a pickup-arm mechanism that is out of position, a damaged hub, or a problem in the motor-driven gear train. These are possibilities, not confirmed diagnoses. If the rod turns but the pickup gear does not, inspect the gear hub for a hairline crack or stripped center, verify that the gear is seated on the shaft, and check whether a lever or spring is preventing engagement. A gear can fail at its hub even when every tooth looks intact.
With the printer unplugged, remove the cassette and look for scraps of paper, labels, dried ink, or foreign objects around the pickup roller and accessible gears. Confirm that the tray is loaded correctly and that the paper guides are not squeezing the stack. Do not lubricate paper-contact surfaces or spray lubricant into the printer. Avoid assuming that a paper-feed error proves the sensor is bad; a mechanical timing or engagement problem can produce similar symptoms.
Stop testing if you hear repeated clicking, grinding, or motor strain. Continued operation can strip a gear, damage a shaft, or overload the feed motor. If the drive train must be disassembled, professional repair is recommended because timing marks, springs, and cable routing can be easy to disturb. A short video showing the rod and pickup arm during a feed attempt can also make the next diagnostic step much clearer.
