Question:
I accidentally pulled the carriage encoder strip in my Epson ET-M2170 too hard and stretched it. The printer can no longer find its home position. What should I check, and how can I find the correct replacement in Ireland or elsewhere in Europe?

Thank you for contacting BCH Technologies, and please accept our apologies that we could not answer sooner. We know printer problems are often urgent, but we want to give each question careful thought and provide a detailed answer. A stretched carriage encoder strip can prevent an Epson ET-M2170 from locating the carriage accurately during startup, but a homing failure alone does not confirm that the strip is the only damaged part. The strip provides position markings that the carriage encoder sensor reads. If it is stretched, creased, scratched, contaminated, incorrectly tensioned, or routed outside the sensor slot, the printer may lose carriage position and fail to home.
Turn the printer off and unplug it before inspecting the mechanism. Do not force the carriage, shorten the strip, add tape, or try to reuse a permanently stretched strip. Check the strip's end hooks and spring or tension point, and look for tears, bends, ink contamination, or a strip that has slipped out of the encoder sensor. If the strip is only dirty rather than stretched, it may be cleaned carefully with a lint-free material and an appropriate mild cleaner, but physical stretching requires replacement.
Match the replacement to the exact Epson ET-M2170 regional parts listing or the part number printed in the model's service documentation. Avoid buying a generic strip based only on length or appearance. A clear photograph of the complete strip, both end mounts, the encoder sensor area, and the printer's model label can help an Epson parts supplier in Ireland or Europe identify the correct component. Availability and part numbering can vary by region.
During installation, the strip must follow the original route, pass through the encoder sensor correctly, and have the proper tension without twisting. Incorrect routing can cause the same homing problem and may damage the strip or sensor. If the printer still cannot home after a verified replacement is installed, the encoder sensor, carriage belt, drive motor, obstruction, or another carriage mechanism may also need diagnosis.
Stop testing if the carriage hits an end stop, grinds, or repeatedly slams during startup. Continued operation can damage the belt, motor, sensor, or carriage assembly. If correct strip routing and tension cannot be confirmed, professional repair is recommended.
