HP 123 Cartridge Filter Punctured During Refill: Can You Seal It or Is the Cartridge Ruined?

Question:
While refilling an HP 123 cartridge, the technician accidentally punctured the cartridge's filter. Is it possible to seal that damaged spot with some kind of sealant, or does the cartridge need to be discarded completely?
Answer:
In this case, once the filter on an HP 123 cartridge has been punctured, the cartridge is usually no longer fully reliable. My honest recommendation is to use whatever life is left in it, but do not depend on it as a long-term solution.
The reason is that the filter is not just a passive covering. In HP cartridges such as the HP 123, the filter plays an important role in managing ink flow, back pressure, and airflow inside the cartridge. Those functions have to remain balanced for the cartridge to print correctly. When the filter is punctured, that balance is disrupted. Even a very small hole can allow the wrong amount of air to enter, which may cause several problems:
-
ink leakage or seepage
-
poor print quality
-
missing colors or broken text
-
inconsistent ink delivery
-
shortened cartridge life
-
cartridge recognition or performance problems in some cases
You can try applying a very small amount of sealant to the puncture point, but this should only be considered a temporary experiment, not a dependable repair. The result is unpredictable. Even if the puncture appears sealed, the original filter structure has already been compromised, so the cartridge may still fail soon afterward.
If you decide to try sealing it anyway, keep these cautions in mind:
-
Use only a tiny amount. Too much sealant can spread, block the venting behavior, or contaminate the cartridge surface.
-
Let it cure fully before reinstalling the cartridge.
-
Watch for leaking, smearing, or fading prints after reinstalling.
-
Do not expect normal lifespan or stable long-term performance.
If the cartridge still prints after the puncture, it may continue working for a short time. However, if you begin seeing symptoms such as streaks, blank areas, ink starvation, or dripping, the puncture is likely affecting the internal pressure system and the cartridge should be replaced.
For HP cartridges, damage to the filter or vent area can sometimes also lead to printer-side cartridge warnings or general cartridge-related errors, even though there may not always be a specific error code tied directly to the puncture itself. In practical terms, the most common outcome is unstable printing rather than a clean, diagnostic error message. So if the printer starts reporting cartridge problems after this happened, the filter damage is a strong suspect.
A good rule of thumb is this: if the puncture is extremely small and the cartridge is already near the end of its usable life, you may try to squeeze the last bit of use out of it. But if you need dependable printing, especially for important documents, replacing the cartridge is the safer path.
Printer problems are often difficult to resolve remotely because they involve physical parts, ink behavior, airflow, and hands-on inspection. Because of that, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting, repair suggestions, or technical support for printer repairs beyond general guidance. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility, printer repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to demand, service is handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we are able to receive your printer. We can work on either a complete printer or specific parts, with clear instructions for how to proceed. We also understand that our service rates may not be the lowest, so we strongly encourage self-help research whenever possible. A great place to start is YouTube, including our own channel homepage at BCH Technologies YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). You can use the search icon next to "About" on the right side of the menu bar to look for videos on specific topics. We receive many questions every day asking whether we have made a video on one issue or another, and after years of publishing content, the fastest way to locate the right video is usually YouTube's search feature. It may also suggest useful videos from other creators.
Thank you again for reaching out to us and for your support. We truly appreciate your trust in BCH Technologies.
