Fixing Epson WF-7210 Error 000021: Troubleshooting CR Motor and Timing Belt Issues!

Question:

A customer asked: "Your videos are so helpful! I removed and cleaned the printhead in my Epson WF-7210, but now I’m getting error code 000021 at startup. What should I do?"

Answer:

The Error 000021 on your Epson WF-7210 typically refers to a CR PID Overload Error. This error occurs when your printer’s carriage return (CR) motor is sending power but isn’t receiving feedback from the CR encoder sensor. The CR encoder sensor reads the clear belt (also called the CR timing scale) that guides the carriage movement.

Here are the most common causes of the error and how to fix them:

  • After cleaning the printhead, the clear belt may have been accidentally dislodged or incorrectly reinstalled. The belt must pass through a small tunnel-like slot located at the back of the carriage return assembly. If it’s out of place, the sensor won’t detect the CR timing marks. Double-check the belt’s positioning and ensure it is properly threaded through the tunnel.

  • Inspect the belt for any damage, such as tooth skips, improper tension, or misalignment. A misaligned belt will prevent the carriage from moving smoothly, triggering the error. Carefully adjust the belt to maintain proper tension.

  • Check for obstructions in the carriage mechanism. Foreign objects, residual grease, or a jammed paper guide can overload the motor, causing it to fail. Inspect the Paper Guide Upper Assembly and Cap Assembly for any detached or misaligned components.

  • Verify that all cables connected to the CR motor and encoder sensor are securely attached. A loose or disconnected cable can disrupt communication between the motor and the main board.

  • If all else fails, there may be a hardware issue, such as a CR motor failure or a main board malfunction (motor driver failure). While less common, these problems often require professional repair or part replacement.

In most cases, carefully repositioning the clear belt through the carriage’s tunnel and ensuring there’s no mechanical obstruction will resolve the issue. If done correctly, your printer should detect the CR timing scale and resume normal operation.

Addressing printer issues can be complex, particularly when dealing with mechanical components. Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide remote troubleshooting or support for printer repairs. However, we do offer in-person evaluation and repair services through our local diagnostic facility: BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks to evaluate your printer after drop-off.
