I purchased my Epson printer in November 2024 and am now getting printer error 034004. There was a paper jam, but I removed the jammed paper and cannot get the error message to clear.

I really cannot afford approximately $300 for diagnosis and a repair deposit. What could be causing error 034004, and is there anything I should check before considering professional repair?

Regarding Epson error code 034004, the fact that you previously had a paper jam is an important clue.

Although the paper itself has been removed, the printer can continue displaying 034004 when the paper-feed mechanism is not moving or reporting its position correctly. In your situation, two of the first things I would suspect are the PF encoder disc coming loose or falling out of position or a problem with the PF FFC cable, such as the cable becoming loose or not being properly connected.

Why Error 034004 Can Remain After the Paper Jam Is Removed

A paper jam is not always simply a sheet of paper blocking the printer.

During a severe jam, the paper may pull against rollers, gears, shafts, sensors, or other parts of the paper-feed mechanism. If the paper was pulled forcefully during removal, a component can sometimes move out of position.

Therefore, clearing all of the visible paper does not necessarily clear the underlying mechanical problem.

Do not assume that the encoder disc is supposed to be pushed tightly against something. Encoder discs and encoder sensors often require very specific alignment. Forcing one into position can damage the disc or sensor.

Also Check the PF FFC Cable

The other major possibility I would consider is the PF FFC cable.

FFC stands for Flexible Flat Cable. These are the thin, flat ribbon-style cables commonly used throughout Epson printers.

The paper-feed encoder sensor needs an electrical connection to the printer's electronics. If the relevant FFC has become disconnected, partially pulled from its connector, damaged, or installed incorrectly, the printer may receive no useful signal from the paper-feed sensor even though the mechanical components are physically moving.

  • inserted only partway,

  • shifted sideways,

  • installed with the contacts facing the wrong direction,

  • held improperly because the connector's locking tab is open or damaged.

If you are already comfortable opening and working on printers, you can visually examine the PF-related cable connections.

However, disconnect the printer from electrical power before inspecting internal connectors. Do not repeatedly pull ribbon cables in and out unnecessarily because the exposed contacts, cable traces, and connector locks can be delicate.

Look Closely for Small Pieces of Paper

I would also inspect the entire paper path one more time.

A surprisingly small piece of paper can remain behind after a jam. Check around:

  • the pickup roller,

  • paper-feed rollers,

  • rear paper path,

  • duplexing area if applicable,

  • lower paper path,

  • roller shafts,

  • gears, and

  • areas immediately around paper sensors.

A small torn corner of paper can interfere with a sensor flag or prevent a mechanism from returning completely to its home position.

Check Whether the Paper-Feed Mechanism Can Rotate

With the printer powered off and unplugged, you can visually inspect the paper-feed mechanism for something obviously preventing normal movement.

Do not force gears or rollers that do not want to move. Some Epson mechanisms are connected through gear trains and may not rotate freely by hand.

You are mainly looking for something clearly abnormal, such as:

  • a gear that has jumped out of position,

The encoder disc normally needs to travel through the correct area of the sensor. If the disc has moved sideways and is no longer running through the sensor slot, the sensor cannot read it properly.

The same basic symptom can occur if the sensor itself has:

  • moved,

  • become disconnected,

  • been physically damaged, or

  • developed contamination around its optical reading area.

Do Not Confuse the PF Encoder With the Carriage Encoder Strip

Epson printers can have more than one encoder system.

The carriage encoder strip is generally the long, narrow, translucent strip running horizontally behind or through the printhead carriage area. It tells the printer where the printhead carriage is located.

The PF encoder, by contrast, is associated with paper-feed movement and is commonly a circular disc or wheel associated with a feed shaft.

Because your symptoms followed a paper jam and involve 034004, my first concern would be the paper-feed side rather than assuming that the long carriage encoder strip is responsible.

Be careful with both components. They are precision-positioning parts and can create additional problems if bent, scratched, stretched, or incorrectly reinstalled.

Could the PF Encoder Disc Have Completely Fallen Off?

Yes, that is one possibility I would investigate.

If you open the printer and find what looks like a thin, translucent circular plastic disc sitting loose inside the printer, do not immediately throw it away or assume that it is packaging material. It could be an encoder disc that has detached from the paper-feed mechanism.

If the PF disc has fallen off, simply removing it from the printer will not fix error 034004. It needs to be returned to its correct operating position and aligned with the corresponding sensor.

The exact installation procedure varies by printer model, so I would recommend searching for disassembly photographs or videos for your particular model before attempting to reinstall it.

If the PF Disc Looks Correct, Move to the Electrical Connection

If the disc appears to be installed properly, my next area of investigation would be the PF sensor and its FFC connection.

Trace the cable only if you are comfortable doing so. Look for a flat cable that has obviously pulled loose or is sitting crooked in a connector.

If a cable was disturbed during a previous repair, maintenance procedure, or disassembly, this becomes an even stronger possibility.

If the printer has never previously been opened, the encoder disc or another mechanical disturbance from the paper jam may be more likely, although a cable or sensor failure is still possible.

Other Possible Causes of Error 034004

If the PF disc and FFC connections are both correct, then the diagnosis becomes more complicated.

Other possibilities can include:

  • a damaged PF encoder sensor,

  • a damaged encoder disc,

  • a paper-feed motor problem,

  • a blocked or damaged paper-feed gear train,

  • a broken gear or shaft,

  • a sensor flag that is stuck,

  • a foreign object remaining inside the mechanism,

  • wiring damage,

  • a connector problem, or

  • an electronic/main-board problem.

The important point is that 034004 after a paper jam does not necessarily mean there is still a full sheet of paper jammed inside. The original jam may have caused another mechanical or sensing problem, and the printer is now detecting that secondary problem.

Restarting the Printer May Not Clear This Type of Error

You can certainly power the printer off, disconnect it from power, inspect it, reconnect it, and restart it.

However, if the PF encoder disc is physically out of position or the PF sensor cable is disconnected, repeatedly power-cycling the printer is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

The printer checks its mechanisms during initialization. If it again commands paper-feed movement but does not receive the signal it expects, 034004 may simply return.

Be Careful If the Printer Is Still Under Warranty
