Question: My Epson L1800 powers on from the rear, but only the paper light comes on. Pressing the front power button does nothing. The fuse and MOSFETs appear to test good. What should I check next?
Answer:
Thank you for contacting BCH Technologies. I am sorry for the delayed reply. A printer that will not start can interrupt work urgently, and we want to give you a careful, detailed answer rather than steer you toward an unnecessary board replacement. Thank you for supporting BCH Technologies and our YouTube channel.
The paper light turning on suggests that at least part of the L1800 is receiving power, but it does not confirm that the mainboard is healthy or that the front power switch and its signal path are working. A good reading at a fuse or MOSFET also cannot, by itself, isolate the fault. Possible causes include a damaged power button, a loose or damaged front-panel ribbon or connector, a power-supply fault, or a mainboard control fault. None is confirmed from the symptoms alone.
Unplug the printer and let it sit before touching the front panel. Check only accessible parts: make sure the button moves normally, inspect the front-panel cable for tears or corrosion, and confirm that its connectors are fully seated. Photograph each connection before moving it. Do not bridge the switch, substitute an unverified power supply, or probe energized circuits. Those shortcuts can damage the board or expose you to electrical hazards.
If the visible checks do not explain the problem, record a short startup video and note the exact L1800 board revision. A technician can use the model-specific service procedure to test the front-panel signal and supply voltages safely. Repair or replacement may be needed, but the results should identify the part first; replacing the mainboard on the strength of the paper light alone risks spending money without fixing the cause.
You can search the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies] for L1800 startup, front-panel, and power-supply troubleshooting. The linked video above shows a related mainboard troubleshooting topic; your printer still needs its own diagnosis.
If the cable and switch appear sound or you are not comfortable opening the front panel, BCH Technologies can evaluate the printer through its repair service. Share the board revision, startup video, and any measurements already taken so the technician can choose the next safe test.
