Epson ET-8550 Transport-Lock Error and Carriage Catching at the Capping Station: What to Check

Question:
My Epson ET-8550 reports a transportation-lock error. The carriage moves slowly and jerkily, then catches at the capping station. I can operate the station's gears when it is removed, but the problem remains after reinstallation. What should I inspect, and could leaving the printer unused dry out the ink system?

Answer:

Thank you for contacting BCH Technologies. I'm sorry this problem has taken so long to resolve. The first priority is the carriage obstruction and startup error. Print-quality checks should wait until the printer can initialize without the carriage striking the station.

The symptoms may involve the capping station, its drive engagement, a displaced linkage, or the carriage position-sensing system. They do not yet identify a failed part. A station that moves by hand when removed can still sit incorrectly or fail to engage the drive when installed. Since the problem began before removal, reinstallation alone should not be assumed to have caused the original fault.

One distinction matters: the Epson transportation lock controls ink supply during transport. Do not assume the visible lever directly drives the capping station's carriage-lock gears. If the lever does not turn those gears, that alone does not prove it is broken. The lock position and the separate carriage mechanism both need to be checked against the correct ET-8550 service reference.

Unplug the printer before inspection. Look at the station's mounting screws, locating tabs, and frame supports to see whether it sits flat and fully seated. Check whether its drive gear meshes with the adjoining drive and whether a spring, lever, or gear tooth is visibly out of place. These are the mounting points and engagement areas to document in a clear close-up. Do not force the carriage, hold the lock down, power the printer while it catches, or slide a gauge under the nozzle plate. If the mechanism still jams after a careful visual check, professional diagnosis is safer than repeated startup attempts.

The encoder strip and its sensor could also contribute to erratic carriage movement, but a visual check cannot confirm that. Avoid repeated brushing, air blasts, or alcohol cleaning. Follow Epson's model-specific cleaning guidance only if the strip is actually dirty.

There is no reliable number of idle days before an ET-8550 clogs. Proper parking and capping help protect the printhead; an idle period alone does not prove the ink tubes are clogged. After the mechanical fault is resolved, start with a nozzle check and clean only if the pattern shows gaps.
