Epson ET-8550 Sublimation Repair: How to Check the Mainboard, Error 031004/031006, Printhead Cables, and Black Ink Setup

Question
I have an Epson EcoTank ET-8550 that I am using for sublimation. I have already ordered a replacement printhead and am now ordering new FFC/FCC printhead cables. I also checked the capping station and believe it is working correctly.
Before installing the new printhead, how can I check the ET-8550 mainboard to make sure there is no additional electrical damage that could damage the replacement printhead?
I also have a question about the sublimation ink configuration. The ET-8550 uses both PB (Photo Black) and BK/B (regular Black). Can I use BCH Premium Black sublimation ink in the regular Black position and BCH Ultra Black in the Photo Black position? If so, how should I handle the ICC/color profile? What should I use for the Gray channel?

Checking the Epson ET-8550 Mainboard Before Installing a New Printhead
In our repair lab, we have a fairly sophisticated collection of diagnostic equipment for testing Epson mainboards. This includes equipment for checking power rails, components under load, MOSFETs, capacitors, driver circuits, and other areas of the printhead power system.
For a single printer repair at home, however, I would not recommend purchasing several thousand dollars' worth of electronic diagnostic equipment just to fully analyze one ET-8550 mainboard.
For a home user, I would concentrate on a few practical checks.
1. Check the F1 and F2 Fuses With a Multimeter
The first components I would check are the F1 and F2 fuses on the ET-8550 mainboard.
These are important because a printhead electrical failure, damaged FFC cable, liquid contamination, or short circuit can sometimes cause a fuse to open. If one of these fuses is blown, replacing the printhead alone may not restore the printer.
Disconnect the printer from AC power before performing continuity or resistance measurements.
Using a multimeter in continuity mode, check across each fuse. A good fuse should show continuity with very low resistance. If the meter shows an open circuit across the fuse, the fuse has likely failed.
However, a blown fuse is usually a symptom rather than the original cause. Simply replacing a blown fuse without finding the short that caused it can result in the replacement fuse blowing again. In a more serious situation, it could also cause additional mainboard or printhead damage.
If F1 or F2 is blown, investigate the printhead, printhead cables, connectors, and mainboard circuitry before installing another printhead.
2. Inspect the Printhead FFC/FCC Cables and Connectors Carefully
Since you are already replacing the printhead cables, that is a good area to inspect.
Look carefully for:

Burned or darkened contacts
-
Corrosion
-
Ink or cleaning solution contamination
-
Folded or damaged cable traces
-
Missing conductive contacts
-
Melted areas
-
Cable contacts that have been inserted crooked
-
Damage inside the mainboard or printhead connectors
A damaged FFC cable can create a short between adjacent conductors. That can damage the printhead, mainboard, or both.
Always disconnect power before connecting or disconnecting the printhead cables. Also make sure the cables are completely straight and fully seated before locking the connectors.
3. Test the Mainboard With the Printhead Cables Disconnected
For a basic home diagnostic test, after confirming that F1 and F2 are good, we sometimes test whether the mainboard can power up without the printhead connected.
Do not connect any of the printhead FFC cables to the printhead during this test.
With the printhead electrically absent, the printer obviously cannot communicate normally with the printhead, so an error is expected.
On the ET-8550, the error we would normally expect under this type of test is 031004.
The important point here is not that Error 031004 means the printer is repaired. In this test, you intentionally disconnected the printhead. Therefore, a printhead-related error is expected.
What we are looking for is whether the mainboard gets through its basic startup process without immediately showing evidence of a deeper electrical problem.
What Does Epson Error 031004 Mean in This Test?
Error 031004 is associated with the printhead/electrical detection side of the printer. Under normal operating circumstances, Error 031004 can be caused by several things, including problems involving the printhead, FFC cables, electrical connections, or mainboard circuitry.
But during this particular diagnostic test, the printhead has deliberately been disconnected. Therefore, receiving 031004 can actually be useful information because the board is recognizing that the printhead circuit is incomplete.
That does not prove every part of the mainboard is perfect, but it gives us more information about where the problem may be located.
What If You Get Epson Error 031006?
If you have already confirmed that F1 and F2 are good, the printhead is disconnected, and the printer produces Error 031006 instead, I would become much more suspicious of a problem deeper inside the mainboard's printhead power/control circuitry.
Error 031006 can indicate that the problem goes beyond a simple blown fuse or disconnected printhead.
At that point, proper diagnosis may require testing components in the mainboard's power train and printhead driver circuitry. This can involve checking semiconductor components, power rails, driver stages, capacitors, and other board-level components.
That is where the repair becomes considerably more difficult for a home user.
If you reach this point, I would recommend having the mainboard professionally diagnosed rather than repeatedly installing replacement printheads or replacing parts by trial and error.
4. Be Careful Before Connecting the New Printhead
This is probably the most important part of the repair.
A damaged printhead can damage a mainboard, but a damaged mainboard can also damage a replacement printhead.
That means a brand-new printhead is not automatically safe simply because F1 and F2 test correctly.
A fuse is only one part of the electrical system. A mainboard can potentially have other failed components while the fuse itself still has continuity.
Therefore, after the fuse test and the disconnected-printhead test, the final test would be to install your known-good FFC cables and replacement printhead and test the printer as a complete system.
But if anything about the mainboard test looks suspicious-particularly if you continue receiving 031006-I would not risk an expensive replacement printhead until the board has been evaluated.
5. Do Not Ignore the Original Cause of the Failure
Before installing everything, think about what happened immediately before the original printhead failure.
For example:

Was cleaning solution used around the printhead?
-
Did ink or liquid reach the FFC cable contacts?
-
Were the printhead cables removed while power was connected?
-
Was a cable inserted at an angle?
-
Did the printer suddenly shut down?
-
Did F1 or F2 blow?
-
Was there smoke, a burnt smell, or visible scorching?
-
Did the problem begin immediately after installing or cleaning a printhead?
Those details can help determine whether you are dealing with a mechanical problem, a printhead failure, a cable short, or board-level electrical damage.
Since you mentioned that you have already inspected the capping station and believe it is functioning correctly, the electrical side deserves particular attention before installing the replacement head.
Can BCH Premium Black Be Used in BK and BCH Ultra Black in PB?
Yes.
For an ET-8550 sublimation setup, you can use:
BK / regular Black: BCH Premium Black sublimation ink
PB / Photo Black: BCH Ultra Black sublimation ink
The ET-8550 has separate black-related channels because the printer's original ink system was designed to use those channels differently depending on the type of printing being performed.
When converting the printer for sublimation, you can take advantage of those separate channels by using two different black formulations.
The Ultra Black can be placed in the PB/Photo Black position, while the Premium Black can be placed in the BK/regular Black position.
The exact appearance of the two blacks after sublimation will still depend on the substrate, transfer paper, temperature, pressing time, pressure, and color-management workflow.
Do Not Put Black Ink in the ET-8550 Gray Channel
There is another important consideration with the ET-8550: the Gray channel.
I recommend using actual gray sublimation ink in this channel rather than putting another black ink into the Gray tank.
This is important because the printer can use Gray when constructing neutral colors, shadows, smooth gradients, and transitions between light and dark tones.
If the Gray channel is filled with black instead, the color-management system is expecting a lighter gray density but is receiving a much darker ink. That can create problems such as:

Shadows becoming too dark

Neutral gray areas developing unwanted color shifts

Loss of shadow detail
-
Abrupt transitions in gradients
-
Excessively dark photographic areas
-
Difficulty obtaining neutral grayscale output

ICC profiles behaving unpredictably

What ICC Profile Should You Use?
For your initial testing, you can start with an Epson factory/OEM color profile that is reasonably close to the paper and print settings you are using.
However, it is important to understand that an Epson factory ICC profile was designed around Epson's original printer, ink, and media configuration. Once you convert the printer to sublimation and begin using different black formulations and sublimation inks, the OEM profile is no longer a perfect description of your printer's color behavior.
It is best considered a starting point, not necessarily the final profile.
Your finished sublimation color is affected by the complete system:

Printer

Sublimation ink

Individual ink formulations

Transfer paper

Driver settings

ICC profile

Heat-press temperature

Pressing time
-
Pressure

Substrate coating
-
Substrate material
For example, the same print can look significantly different after being transferred to polyester fabric versus ceramic, aluminum, or another coated substrate.
Start With a Controlled Baseline
When experimenting with profiles, keep as many variables constant as possible.
Use the same ink, paper, printer settings, transfer temperature, transfer time, and substrate while evaluating the results.
If you change the ICC profile, paper, heat temperature, and pressing time simultaneously, it becomes very difficult to determine which change actually improved or worsened the color.
Avoid Double Color Management
Another common issue is accidentally applying color correction twice.
For example, you do not want your design software to apply an ICC profile while the Epson driver simultaneously performs another strong color correction unless your workflow specifically requires that arrangement.
A normal ICC-managed workflow usually has one part of the printing chain responsible for color management.
If both the application and printer driver aggressively modify the same colors, you can end up with excessive color shifts, oversaturation, weak blacks, or inaccurate neutral tones.
For the Most Accurate Results, Use a Custom ICC Profile
Ultimately, the best ICC profile is one created specifically for your combination of:
ET-8550 + your sublimation ink set + your transfer paper + your printer settings + your normal transfer conditions + your substrate.
A custom profile measures the actual output of your particular printing system instead of assuming that it behaves like an OEM Epson ink configuration.
That becomes especially valuable when photographic accuracy, neutral gray reproduction, skin tones, and smooth gradients are important.
A Practical Order for Your Repair
Based on what you described, I would approach the printer in approximately this order:

Leave the replacement printhead disconnected.

Inspect the mainboard and printhead connectors for contamination or damage.

Check F1 and F2 for continuity.

Inspect or replace the damaged/suspect FFC printhead cables.
-
Power up the board with the printhead electrically disconnected.

Look at whether you receive 031004 or 031006.
-
If you receive 031006 after the fuse checks, consider professional mainboard diagnosis before risking the new printhead.

If the board behaves normally for the disconnected-head test, install the new cables and printhead carefully.

Test the complete printer.
-
Once the printer is electrically and mechanically stable, work on the sublimation ink configuration and color profiling.
This sequence helps keep the electrical repair separate from the color-management issue. There is little benefit in spending a great deal of time tuning an ICC profile until you know the printer itself is electrically stable.
