Epson ET-8550 Sublimation Conversion: Do You Need BCH V4 Dampers, a Nipple Conversion, or a Drag Chain?

Question
I am preparing an Epson ET-8550 for sublimation printing and was considering the nipple conversion kit. Should I also purchase the new BCH V4 damper, or should I stay with the original damper setup since I am using sublimation ink rather than DTF ink?
I also ordered a completely new set of ink hoses for the printer. Do I need a drag chain for a sublimation setup, or is the drag chain mainly intended for DTF and DTG conversions?

For what you are planning, the most important point is this: if you are using the Epson ET-8550 for sublimation ink, I would not recommend doing the nipple conversion at all.
The nipple conversion and external damper arrangement serve a different purpose from a straightforward sublimation conversion. If the ET-8550 is being used as a sublimation printer, you can normally take advantage of Epson's original EcoTank ink-delivery system. There is generally no reason to convert the printhead to nipples and add external dampers simply because you are changing the ink from the original Epson ink to sublimation ink.
Do You Need the BCH V4 Damper for Sublimation?
No. For the sublimation configuration you described, I would not install the nipple conversion, and therefore you would not need the BCH V4 dampers either.
The same applies to adding another style of external damper. The question is not really whether the V4 damper is better than the original damper for sublimation. Rather, if you are keeping the printer as a relatively conventional sublimation setup, there is no reason to introduce this additional damper system in the first place.
Dampers become more important when the original ink-delivery architecture has been substantially changed. For example, modified DTF systems may use different ink routing, external tubing, nipple adapters, circulation arrangements, and other components because DTF white ink presents very different maintenance and flow challenges.
Sublimation ink does not normally require this type of modification.
Every additional connector, nipple, damper, tube joint, and adapter also introduces another possible location for an air leak, ink leak, restriction, or loss of prime. If the original EcoTank delivery system can accomplish what you need, keeping the system simpler is generally preferable.
What About the New Ink Hoses?
If the new hoses you ordered are replacements for the ET-8550's original ink tubing, there is nothing wrong with having them available. However, you do not necessarily need to replace perfectly functional tubing simply because you are converting the printer to sublimation.
Replacing the hoses makes more sense if the original tubing is damaged, heavily contaminated, clogged, cracked, pinched, or if you have another specific reason for replacing the ink-delivery system.
If the printer previously contained another type of ink, contamination is a separate issue. Mixing residual OEM ink, pigment ink, dye ink, sublimation ink, cleaning solution, or other specialty inks can produce unexpected color and flow problems. In those situations, the condition of the tanks, tubing, printhead, and other ink-contact components should be considered before introducing the new sublimation ink.
If you are starting with a clean or new printer, maintaining the original EcoTank ink path is usually the simpler approach.
Do You Need a Drag Chain for Sublimation?
For a normal ET-8550 sublimation configuration, you generally do not need a drag chain either.
A drag chain is useful when additional tubes or cables must travel back and forth with the printhead carriage. It keeps those lines organized and helps control their movement so that they do not sag, kink, catch on printer components, interfere with carriage movement, or repeatedly bend at an uncontrolled point.
That becomes much more relevant with heavily modified DTF or DTG printers, particularly when external ink-delivery or circulation tubing has been added to the moving carriage.
If you are simply putting sublimation ink into the ET-8550 and retaining the printer's original internal ink-delivery arrangement, you do not have those additional external ink tubes traveling with the carriage. Therefore, there is normally nothing that requires a drag chain.
In other words, I would keep your sublimation setup as simple as possible:

Keep the ET-8550's original ink-delivery architecture when practical.

Do not perform the nipple conversion solely for sublimation ink.

Do not add the V4 dampers solely because you are converting to sublimation.

Do not add a drag chain unless you have made another modification that specifically requires moving external tubing or wiring.

Use your replacement ink hoses only when there is an actual reason to replace the existing tubing.

DTF, especially a system involving white ink, creates challenges that a conventional sublimation printer does not have. Modifications that make sense for managing a DTF ink system can add unnecessary complexity to a sublimation setup.
