Epson ET-8550 Sublimation Repair: Blown Fuses, Printhead and Mainboard Damage, and Whether You Need V2 Dampers

Question
I recently purchased a used Epson ET-8550 for my sublimation business. I knew the printer needed some work when I bought it, and the previous owner told me that it needed new fuses. I realize that a blown fuse can indicate a larger underlying problem rather than simply being a bad fuse.
I have already ordered new ink tanks and new ink hoses, and I thoroughly cleaned the original dampers. I am concerned that the printhead may also be clogged, so I would like to determine the condition of the printhead before replacing it.
I was also considering installing a nipple conversion kit. Since I am using the ET-8550 for sublimation rather than DTF printing, should I install V2 dampers with the nipple conversion, or would it be better to continue using the original ET-8550 dampers?

A Blown Fuse Is Usually a Symptom, Not the Root Problem
Your instinct about the fuse is correct. If somebody says an ET-8550 "just needs a fuse," I would be cautious about treating the fuse as the only defective component.
The fuses on the mainboard are protective devices. They normally do not fail without a reason. If excessive current passes through part of the printhead-driving circuit, the fuse can open to protect the board from more serious damage. On the ET-8550, the mainboard has important protection fuses including F1 and F2. BCH has also documented ET-8550 cases in which printhead-related electrical failures are associated with blown fuses, damaged FFC cables, and mainboard problems.
Therefore, simply soldering another fuse onto the board without finding the original short can result in the replacement fuse blowing again. In a worse situation, another component can be damaged before the fuse opens.
If the printer is displaying error 031006 or, on some Epson platforms, 0x9A, those errors can also be associated with an electrical problem involving the printhead firing circuit, FFC cables, or mainboard protection circuitry. A blown fuse is one possibility, but the underlying cause still needs to be identified rather than assuming the fuse itself caused the failure.
A Clogged Printhead and an Electrically Damaged Printhead Are Two Different Problems
This distinction is especially important in your situation.
A clogged printhead is primarily an ink-flow problem. Dried ink, air in the ink channels, poor capping-station suction, blocked dampers, or dried material inside the printhead can prevent ink from reaching or exiting the nozzles.
An electrically damaged printhead is different. A short circuit inside the printhead can overload the head-driving circuit and potentially damage a fuse, FFC cable, driver circuit, or mainboard.
Cleaning may help a hydraulically clogged printhead, but cleaning cannot repair an internal electrical short.
Because you purchased the printer used and were specifically told that it needed fuses, I would be more concerned about electrical damage than I would be about an ordinary clog. The history of a blown fuse changes how I would approach this printer.
Be Very Careful About Reusing the Existing Printhead
If the old printhead caused the original electrical failure, installing a repaired mainboard and then reconnecting that same defective printhead could damage the repaired board again.
The same concern applies to the printhead FFC cables.
The ET-8550 uses flat-flex cables between the mainboard and printhead. If ink, cleaning solution, corrosion, or heat damage affects the contacts, the cable can short adjacent conductors. Sometimes the damage is obvious-a dark contact, melted area, corrosion, or burned edge-but sometimes it is difficult to see.
For that reason, if I were repairing a used ET-8550 with an unknown history and confirmed blown mainboard fuses, my preferred approach would be to address these three components together:

Printhead
-
Printhead FFC cables
-
Mainboard
The mainboard can either be replaced or repaired if the damage is repairable.
I especially recommend replacing the FFC cables when installing a new printhead and repaired/replacement mainboard because the cables are relatively inexpensive compared with the other two components. Reusing a questionable cable introduces another possible short into an otherwise repaired system.
Avoid the Printhead-Mainboard Damage Loop
This is the main reason I would recommend treating the printhead, FFC cables, and mainboard as one electrical system instead of three unrelated repairs.
A defective printhead can damage the mainboard.
A damaged FFC cable can damage the printhead or mainboard.
A defective head-driving circuit on the mainboard can potentially damage a replacement printhead.
That is how people sometimes get caught in a repair loop: repair the board, reconnect the bad head, damage the board again; replace the head, reconnect a damaged cable or board, and damage the new head.
When the history of the printer is uncertain, replacing the suspected printhead and FFC cables while repairing or replacing the mainboard gives you a much cleaner starting point.
Also, never bypass a blown fuse with wire, solder, foil, or another oversized conductor. The fuse is there to protect more expensive components.
I Would Repair the Electrical Problem Before Doing Any Nipple Conversion
For your particular purpose-sublimation printing-I would not make the nipple conversion the priority.
Get the ET-8550 electrically healthy first.
You should ideally have a known-good printhead, good FFC cables, and a functioning mainboard before investing time in additional ink-system modifications. Otherwise, if the printer does not work afterward, you will have several modifications involved at once and troubleshooting becomes much more complicated.
The ET-8550's original ink-delivery system can work perfectly well with sublimation ink when everything is functioning correctly. Sublimation ink does not create the same ink-delivery challenges as a DTF system running white pigment ink.
For that reason, you do not need to perform a nipple conversion or install V2 dampers merely because you are converting the ET-8550 to sublimation.
If your original damper assembly is clean, undamaged, sealing correctly, and flowing ink properly, there is no requirement to replace it with V2 dampers simply for sublimation use.
What If You Still Want to Install the Nipple Conversion?
This is where there is an important distinction.
If you do not perform the nipple conversion, you can remain with the original ET-8550 damper system.
However, if you do perform the nipple conversion, you generally cannot simply reconnect the original OEM-style ET-8550 dampers to the new nipple manifold. The connection system has changed.
BCH's V2 dampers are designed to work with the nipple-style setup, and our previous ET-8550 testing has found V2 dampers to be a reliable choice for this conversion.
So the practical answer is:
For sublimation without a nipple conversion: keep the original damper system if it is in good condition.
For sublimation with a nipple conversion: use compatible nipple-style dampers; V2 dampers are the established BCH option.
The V2 dampers are not exclusively for DTF. They can be used with sublimation ink as well. The reason they are seen frequently in DTF conversions is that DTF users often modify the ET-8550's ink-delivery system extensively, particularly because white pigment ink creates additional circulation and flow requirements.
In Your Situation, I Would Keep the Ink System Simple
Since this printer already has an unknown electrical history, my preference would be to minimize modifications until you know that the machine operates correctly.
You have already replaced the tanks and hoses and cleaned the dampers. Assuming those components are in good physical condition and compatible with your setup, I would concentrate your effort and budget on the electrical side first.
In other words, I would prioritize:
Known-good printhead → new/known-good FFC cables → repaired or replacement mainboard → verify printer operation → establish good ink flow → then consider optional modifications.
If the printer operates correctly after those repairs, there may be no reason at all to install the nipple conversion for a sublimation application.
Check the Capping Station Before Concluding That a New Printhead Is Clogged
Once the electrical problem is resolved, remember that a poor nozzle check does not automatically mean the printhead itself is clogged.
The ET-8550 depends on the capping station and pump system to prime the printhead. If the cap does not seal against the printhead properly, the pump cannot create the vacuum necessary to pull ink through the nozzles.
That can produce symptoms that look almost identical to a clogged head:

Missing colors
-
Completely blank nozzle checks

Air remaining inside ink lines
-
Ink reaching the dampers but not the nozzles

Repeated cleaning cycles with little or no improvement
Therefore, after the electrical repairs, I would evaluate the ink-delivery system as a complete path: tank → tubing → damper → printhead → capping station → waste pump.
However, because you already have a reported fuse failure, I would not repeatedly power up and test the questionable original printhead simply to determine whether it is clogged. If that printhead has an internal electrical short, every power-up creates another opportunity to damage the board.
My Overall Recommendation
Based on the history you were given, I would assume there is a possibility that the original printhead failed electrically and caused damage downstream.
I would therefore strongly consider installing a new printhead and new printhead FFC cables at the same time that the mainboard is repaired or replaced. That gives you the best chance of preventing one defective component from damaging another and starting the same failure cycle again.
You can repair the mainboard yourself if you have the equipment and experience for board-level diagnosis and surface-mount soldering, or you can send the board to us for evaluation and repair.
For your sublimation setup, I would not automatically install the nipple conversion or V2 dampers. The stock ET-8550 ink system can be used for sublimation. If you intentionally decide to perform the nipple conversion anyway, then use dampers intended for the nipple-style connection, such as the V2 dampers, rather than attempting to reuse the original OEM damper connection.
