Epson Error 031006 After Printhead Cleaning: Waterproofing, Internal Leaks, FFC Cable Shorts, and Mainboard Damage

I followed the waterproofing procedure shown in the video and used the waterproofing product I purchased from BCH Technologies on my Epson printhead. The printer worked for a few days, but after performing a printhead cleaning, it suddenly displayed error code 031006. If the printhead was waterproofed, what could still have caused this error?

What Does Epson Error 031006 Mean?
Epson error code 031006 is generally associated with the electrical power circuit for the printhead. Depending on the Epson model, it may be described as a printhead fuse blown error, head power supply failure, or another fault in the printhead electrical circuit.
The components involved can include:

The printhead itself
-
The printhead FFC, or flat flexible ribbon cable
-
The FFC contacts and printhead connector
-
The printhead power circuit on the mainboard
-
A mainboard fuse associated with the printhead circuit
-
Printhead driver components on the mainboard
Moisture or cleaning solution around the FFC contacts is one common way this type of problem can occur. Liquid can bridge electrical contacts that should remain isolated from each other. Even a very small amount can potentially create a short circuit when voltage is applied to the printhead.
The fact that 031006 appeared immediately after a printhead cleaning cycle makes contamination or an electrical problem around the printhead worth considering carefully. However, the timing alone cannot prove exactly where the failure occurred.
Waterproofing the Outside Does Not Completely Eliminate the Possibility of a Leak
If you already waterproofed the printhead, there are two general areas I would think about: an external leak around the electrical connection and an internal leak inside the printhead assembly.
Waterproofing is primarily intended to reduce the chance of cleaning liquid reaching vulnerable electrical areas from the outside. It cannot necessarily protect against liquid that enters the printhead internally.
External Leakage Around the FFC Cable
On the outside of the printhead, pay particular attention to the area underneath and around the FFC cable connection.
One area that is sometimes overlooked during waterproofing is underneath the FFC cable and around the base of the connector. It is not enough to protect only the obvious exposed surfaces around the top of the printhead.
In my experience, one of the most vulnerable locations is where the FFC connector meets the printhead column or housing. There can be a small gap in this area. Cleaning solution that reaches this gap can migrate toward the electrical contacts.
The FFC connector itself is especially important because its conductive traces are positioned very close together. If liquid containing ink, residue, minerals, or cleaning chemicals bridges neighboring contacts, the result can be a short circuit.
Once that happens, error 031006 may be the result of a blown head-circuit fuse, damaged FFC cable, damaged printhead electronics, or damage farther upstream on the mainboard.
Check the FFC Cable for Evidence of Moisture or Electrical Damage
If the printer is going to be disassembled for inspection, disconnect it completely from power before touching or disconnecting the FFC cables. The FFC should not be inserted or removed while the printer has power.
After removing the printhead, inspect the printhead end of the FFC cable carefully.
Look for:

Brown or black burn marks
-
Darkened individual contacts
-
Green, blue, or white corrosion
-
Tarnished copper contacts
-
Ink or cleaning-fluid residue
-
Wrinkling or deformation of the cable
-
Damaged conductive traces
-
A cable that was inserted at an angle
-
Contaminated connector pins
A short severe enough to damage the ribbon cable will sometimes leave obvious evidence, but not always. The absence of visible burning does not guarantee that the electrical system is undamaged.
The Leak May Be Coming From Inside the Printhead
This is the other possibility that waterproofing cannot completely prevent.
Inside the Epson printhead assembly, there is a sealing system between different parts of the ink path. Epson uses a relatively firm rubber gasket in this area.
Under normal printing and ordinary printer-controlled cleaning cycles, I generally would not expect this seal to suddenly fail if everything is assembled correctly. However, excessive external pressure applied during manual cleaning can create conditions that the printhead was not designed to experience.
This is particularly important when using what I sometimes call waterfall-style cleaning methods, where a large quantity of cleaning solution is pushed through or over the printhead.
If enough liquid or pressure is applied, cleaning fluid can potentially get beyond an internal gasket and enter areas of the printhead where liquid should never be present.
If that happens, waterproofing around the exterior connector cannot stop the problem because the contamination is approaching the electronics from inside the printhead rather than from outside.
Be Careful With High-Pressure Manual Cleaning
People naturally assume that if some cleaning pressure is good, more pressure will clean a stubborn nozzle more effectively. Unfortunately, printheads contain very small internal passages, seals, membranes, and electronic components.
A printer's normal cleaning system operates within the mechanical design of the ink-delivery system. Manually forcing cleaning solution through the head can create very different pressures.
If a syringe or another method is used to force a substantial volume of solution through the head, there is a possibility of:

Damaging an internal gasket
-
Moving a gasket out of position
-
Forcing liquid past a seal
-
Delaminating or damaging internal structures
-
Allowing cleaning solution into the electrical section of the printhead
That is why an aggressive cleaning procedure can sometimes turn a nozzle problem into an electrical problem.
Check the Internal Gasket and Printhead Assembly
If the printhead has previously been disassembled, the gasket installation becomes especially important.
The gasket should be checked for:

Incorrect orientation
-
Being installed upside down
-
Being pinched
-
Being shifted out of its intended position
-
Damage to the gasket surface
-
Contamination preventing it from sealing properly
Also check the four screws that secure the printhead assembly. They need to be seated correctly and tightened evenly enough for the sealing surfaces to mate properly.
If one screw is loose, or if the assembly is not sitting evenly, the gasket may not be compressed uniformly.
That can provide a path for liquid to move somewhere it normally could not.
How Can You Tell Whether the Leak Was Internal or External?
One useful clue is the condition of the FFC cable after removing the printhead.
If cleaning solution entered around the external FFC connection, you may find:

Corrosion
-
Tarnishing
-
Ink residue
-
Cleaning-solution residue
-
Burned contacts
-
Discolored FFC traces
If you remove the printhead and the outside FFC connection is extremely clean, with no visible burn marks, contamination, or tarnishing, an internal leak becomes more suspicious-particularly when the problem began immediately following an aggressive manual cleaning procedure.
It still does not prove the source with 100% certainty, because electrical components can fail without leaving obvious external evidence. However, it is an important diagnostic clue.
The Mainboard May Already Be Involved
Once Epson 031006 occurs, the problem may no longer be limited to finding where the moisture originally entered.
If the printhead circuit was shorted, a protective fuse on the mainboard may have opened. Depending on how the electrical failure occurred, the mainboard's printhead-driving circuitry may also have been affected.
Therefore, I would be cautious about simply replacing or bypassing a fuse and turning the printer back on.
A fuse usually fails because excessive current passed through the circuit. If the underlying short is still present in the printhead, FFC cable, connector, or mainboard circuitry, restoring the fuse without identifying the cause may immediately recreate the failure and could potentially damage additional components.
The diagnostic sequence therefore needs to consider the entire electrical path:
Printhead → FFC cable → connector → mainboard fuse → printhead driver circuitry
Replacing only one component does not necessarily solve error 031006 if another part of that chain remains damaged.
Why Did It Work for Several Days Before Error 031006 Appeared?
That delay does not necessarily rule out moisture.
A small amount of fluid can sometimes remain trapped where it does not immediately create a direct electrical path. Printing, carriage movement, heat, vibration, or another cleaning cycle may move the liquid or residue.
A subsequent cleaning cycle can also introduce additional fluid.
Therefore, a printer can sometimes continue working for a period before an electrical problem becomes apparent.
There is also another possibility: the waterproofing and later error may simply be coincidental. A defective printhead, damaged FFC, improperly seated ribbon cable, or mainboard failure can also produce error 031006 without an external cleaning-fluid leak.
That is why inspection is important before assuming that one particular component is responsible.
What I Would Pay the Most Attention To
Given the sequence you described-waterproofing the printhead, operating successfully for several days, and then receiving 031006 following a printhead cleaning-I would pay particular attention to two areas.
First is the FFC connector area, especially underneath the ribbon cable and the small gap between the connector and the printhead housing or column. Make sure this entire vulnerable area was protected rather than only the easily visible outer surface.
Second is the inside of the printhead, particularly if any manual flushing, waterfall cleaning, syringe pressure, or similar cleaning procedure was performed. The internal hard-rubber gasket can become a route for liquid if it has been damaged, displaced, installed incorrectly, or subjected to excessive fluid pressure.
If the printhead is removed and you find obvious burns or tarnishing around the FFC, that provides evidence pointing toward contamination around the external electrical connection. If the external electrical connection remains very clean, yet liquid reached the electronics, then an internal path deserves much closer consideration.
Unfortunately, after error 031006 has occurred, finding and correcting the original leak may not by itself restore the printer. The printhead, FFC, mainboard fuse, or mainboard head-driving circuit may already have sustained electrical damage.
