Epson ET-8550 Clunking After a Paper Jam and Black Dots on Both Sides: Safe Checks

Question: After a paper jam while printing stickers on the thick-paper setting, my Epson ET-8550 still reported a jam. It now clunks and scrapes thicker paper, leaving small paper pieces inside. After I cleaned it and left it off for 12 hours, a test on regular paper no longer scraped, but black dots appeared about 2 cm apart down both sides of the sheet. What can I check?

Answer:

Thank you for contacting BCH Technologies. I am sorry for the delayed reply. Printer trouble can interrupt important work, and we want to give you a careful, detailed answer before you risk another damaged sheet or an unnecessary part purchase. Thank you for supporting BCH Technologies and our YouTube channel.

Please stop printing while the ET-8550 clunks or scrapes. A remaining piece of the jam, a shifted paper guide, or a problem in the feed or duplex path could cause the noise. The black dots on both sides may come from ink transferred by a contaminated roller or another contact point. Their roughly 2 cm spacing does not identify a particular roller or prove that the printhead has failed. The symptoms need inspection before any diagnosis is certain.

Turn the printer off, unplug it, and allow moving parts to stop. Remove the rear access or duplex unit only as described in the ET-8550 instructions, and inspect visible paper paths with a light. Look for torn sticker backing, small paper scraps, misplaced guides, or obvious ink buildup. Check the accessible rollers without scraping their surfaces. Do not force the carriage or gears, reach into hidden mechanisms, apply household solvents, or run repeated test prints to "clear" the clunk. Those steps can worsen a jam or damage the paper path and printhead.

If you find a loose scrap in an accessible area, remove it gently and reassemble the parts correctly. If the noise returns, the path still scrapes, or nothing is visible, stop and arrange model-specific service. A short video of the feed cycle and clear photos of both sides of a marked sheet can help a technician distinguish a mechanical contact problem from ink transfer. A feed or duplex component may need repair; it should be identified by inspection rather than replaced on a guess.

Search the BCH Technologies YouTube channel [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies] for ET-8550 paper-feed, duplex, and jam topics. The video above covers paper-feed troubleshooting, but it cannot establish the failed part in your printer from a distance.

If local shops cannot take the ET-8550, BCH Technologies can review the evidence and discuss a repair evaluation. See the BCH printer repair service [https://bchtechnologies.com/collections/printer-repair-service], and include the feed video and marked-page photos when you contact the team.
