Epson ET-15000 False Paper Jam: Rear Paper Feed Hopper, Sensors, and Feed Mechanism Troubleshooting

I have an Epson ET-15000 that has been converted for sublimation printing. The printer repeatedly reports a paper jam even though I cannot find any paper stuck inside.

I have already checked several things. The printhead carriage moves freely from side to side, the encoder strip appears to be positioned correctly, and I have carefully checked the printer for actual pieces of jammed paper.

While watching the printer attempt to feed paper from the rear, I noticed something unusual: the rear paper feed hopper does not look level. One side appears to sit higher than the other. Could an uneven rear paper feed hopper cause the printer to report a false paper jam? Is this something that can be repaired, and approximately how much would a repair cost? I am also working under a deadline for a sublimation order.

The Uneven Rear Paper Feed Hopper Is an Important Clue

Based on your description, I would pay close attention to the rear paper feed assembly.

The two sides of the rear paper hopper normally need to move together so that the paper is presented to the pickup mechanism evenly. If one side is noticeably higher than the other, something may be disconnected, displaced, cracked, or improperly seated in the rear feeder assembly.

Possible causes include a hopper pivot that has come out of position, a damaged plastic mounting point, a spring that has become disconnected, a problem with the lifting mechanism, or an issue elsewhere in the automatic sheet feeder mechanism.

This can absolutely contribute to what appears to be a "false" paper jam.

A printer does not always determine that a jam exists by physically detecting a sheet trapped somewhere. During feeding, the printer expects the paper to reach specific paper sensors within a certain period of time. If the rear feeder picks the sheet up crooked, fails to pick it up completely, or moves it too slowly, the expected sensor transition may never occur. The printer can then report a paper-feed or paper-jam condition even though no sheet is physically wedged inside.

Epson's own ET-15000 troubleshooting information also treats feed problems, roller condition, paper loading, and the complete paper path as possible causes when paper fails to feed correctly or a jam message persists.

Your Carriage and Encoder Strip Checks Were Useful, but I Would Shift Attention to the Paper-Feed System

It was good that you checked whether the printhead carriage can move freely and whether the transparent carriage encoder strip is correctly positioned.

However, based on the symptoms you described, those would not be my primary suspects now.

The carriage encoder strip mainly tells the printer where the printhead carriage is located. A dirty, damaged, or incorrectly installed carriage encoder can create carriage-positioning problems, unusual movement, or related carriage errors. It is less directly involved in determining whether a sheet of paper has successfully traveled through the feed path.

For a recurring paper-jam message with an obviously uneven rear hopper, I would focus more heavily on the following areas:

  • The rear paper hopper and its left and right mounting points

  • The rear pickup roller and pickup mechanism

  • Springs, gears, pivots, and lifting components associated with the rear feeder

  • The paper-entry or PE sensor and its movable sensor flag

  • Paper-feed rollers and their drive mechanism

  • The PF, or paper-feed, encoder system if the rollers are not rotating the expected distance

  • Small scraps of paper or debris around the sensors that may not look like a conventional paper jam

  • The rear cover and paper-path components being fully seated

A small piece of paper, label material, adhesive, or other debris can sometimes interfere with a sensor lever without being obvious during a normal visual inspection.

Check Whether the Problem Occurs From Both Paper Sources

One useful diagnostic distinction is whether the printer produces the same problem when feeding from the main cassette and when feeding from the rear paper feed.

If the printer consistently feeds correctly from the cassette but fails from the rear feeder, that would strengthen the suspicion that the problem is specifically associated with the rear pickup/hopper mechanism.

If both paper sources produce the same jam condition at approximately the same point in the feeding process, I would start looking farther downstream at components shared by both paper paths, particularly the paper sensors, feed rollers, drive system, or PF encoder.

This type of comparison can help narrow the problem down without immediately replacing an entire feeder assembly.

Watch Exactly What Happens to the Paper

Since you have already been observing the printer mechanically, watch what happens during the first few seconds of a print attempt.

For example, determine whether the printer:

  • Never grabs the sheet at all

  • Grabs only one side of the sheet

  • Pulls the sheet in diagonally

  • Pulls the sheet several inches and then stops

  • Feeds the sheet normally but still reports a jam

  • Makes clicking, grinding, or slipping noises while trying to feed

  • Raises or lowers one side of the rear hopper differently from the other

These symptoms point toward somewhat different failures.

If the sheet immediately enters crooked, an uneven hopper or pickup-pressure problem becomes especially suspicious. If the paper moves normally through the printer but a jam is still reported, a sensor or sensor-flag problem becomes more likely.

Inspect the Paper Sensors and Sensor Flags

The paper path contains mechanical sensor flags that are moved by the sheet as it travels through the printer. These small plastic levers can become stuck, broken, bent, contaminated, or displaced.

A sensor flag should normally move freely and return to its original position.

If one remains permanently activated-or never activates because it has broken off-the printer's control system can interpret the sensor sequence as a paper jam.

This is one reason that simply looking for trapped paper does not always solve a recurring jam message.

The Rear Pickup Roller May Also Be Involved

The rear pickup roller needs enough traction and pressure to pull the sheet into the printer at the expected speed.

Sublimation paper can place additional demands on the feeding system because different brands vary in thickness, coating, stiffness, surface texture, and curl. The fact that the printer has been converted to sublimation does not by itself cause a paper jam, because the ink conversion does not fundamentally change the ET-15000's paper-feed mechanism. However, the media being used can certainly expose a marginal roller or feeder problem.

A worn, contaminated, or improperly loaded pickup mechanism can grab one edge before the other and make the paper enter at an angle. Epson also recommends checking paper loading, edge-guide positioning, media condition, paper settings, and roller cleanliness when diagnosing ET-15000 feeding problems.

Try comparing the behavior with a few sheets of ordinary compatible printer paper. If plain paper feeds correctly but your sublimation paper repeatedly misfeeds, paper characteristics may be contributing to the problem. If every type of paper fails in exactly the same way, a mechanical problem becomes more likely.

Make Sure the Rear Feed Assembly Is Actually Out of Position

Before replacing parts, compare both sides of the hopper carefully.

Sometimes a plastic paper support or guide can appear uneven depending on how it is extended. However, if the actual spring-loaded or moving feeder platform is noticeably higher on one side, does not move symmetrically, or appears to have come out of its mounting point, that is abnormal and deserves further inspection.

I would not recommend forcing the high side downward. If a pivot, spring, or gear is displaced, applying force can turn a repairable alignment problem into a broken plastic frame or feeder assembly.

No Numeric Error Code Was Included

You mentioned that the ET-15000 is reporting a paper jam, but you did not provide a specific numeric error code.

For that reason, I would not assign a particular Epson error code based only on the paper-jam message. If the LCD displays a numeric code in addition to the message, record the exact code before clearing or restarting the printer. A numeric code can sometimes significantly narrow the diagnosis.

The exact wording on the LCD is also useful. Epson distinguishes between different paper-feed, paper-out, and general printer-error conditions, so knowing whether the printer says that paper is jammed internally, cannot be fed, or simply reports a general printer error can help identify the affected area.

Could BCH Technologies Repair This?

This type of problem is potentially repairable, but we would need to physically examine the printer before knowing whether the fault is simply a displaced feeder component or whether parts such as the rear feeder assembly, sensor, gear train, roller system, or another paper-handling component need replacement.

The fact that the printer has been converted for sublimation is important information and should be disclosed when arranging service, but it does not automatically establish the cause of the paper-feed failure.

Unfortunately, I cannot give you an accurate repair price based solely on the symptoms. Two ET-15000 printers displaying the same "paper jam" message could require completely different repairs. One might have a relatively simple mechanical alignment issue, while another might require substantial disassembly and replacement of a paper-feed assembly.
