Question:
The paper reverse does not work on my DTG pro fusion with a model J of the printer. The paper overfeeder while printing, the reverse button seems to not pushing at all if there was a jam, but it clicks. The paper feed (out) button also works fine. Is it simply a bad relay, or is something else going on?

We appreciate you contacting us! We are very thankful for your likes, comments, and subscriptions on our YouTube Channel, where we need you most (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Your feedback really helps anyone in the DIY printer repair world grow technical and create practical solutions.
So here are some of the potential causes of what is going on with your DTG Pro Fusion Model J printer and why or what could have happened to the paper reverse function. According to the information you provided, here are a few observations and corresponding workarounds:
Logic Board & Signal Overwrite Issues:
Assuming that the switch is fine and you've already checked the connection, the culprit probably lies in the logic board that controls the paper feed motor. In this situation, the signal from the printer will conflict with the board and cause it to overwrite, and thus, the reverse function will not work properly.
There are two different boards, which can sometimes get an error. However, one is immune from the paper eject signal, and the user must manually select "Roll Feed" in his RIP software (such as Model J). The other kind replaces the paper eject signal and requires you to choose "Sheet Feed" in the software,. Since both boards control the paper feed motor, a misinterpretation of the signals by the board can prevent the reverse function from working as it should be.
Therefore, the problem may arise with the signal processing. The overwrite board can have bouts where it “thinks” the mainboard has a signal and will override any manual inputs (say the paper reverse button). For some reason (I think that over time the board's logic gets a little "fuzzy"), it occasionally, and for an inexplicable reason, stops realizing that reverse means backup. Sometimes I have to restart the board by powering down the main power. It may be a temporary remedy, but you might notice that reversing work again after restarting the main power since this allows the control board to reset and receive proper inputs once more.
Manual Reversing & Practical Solutions
I have always had this problem with logic boards, especially the reverse function, which only works after a power cycle. This can get annoying, but on the positive side, you can manually roll the film back by removing the cover of the printer. This enables you to manually move the cogs that control the paper feed without depending on the button when and if the board's logic fails. I suggest removing the cover so that Model J can be controlled at the paper feed mechanism.
If the problem persists intermittently, you may need to either try other ways of restoring this type of logic board to life or replace it completely. While manual reversal serves as only a temporary solution, main power recycling after an extended duty cycle can temporarily restore the reverse.
Printing problems are diverse and often complex to resolve due to the changes needed on the repair side. Note: We cannot offer remote troubleshooting and detailed printer repairs. However, we do have a walk-in diagnostic and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service) at our local location. Due to these factors, we make repairs on a first-come, first-serve basis, and it can be a few weeks before we can accept your printer for drop-off or mail-in repairs. We do both complete repairs to printers and can replace individual parts so that you don't require a new one.
