Troubleshooting Main Board Burnout Issues in Printers

Question:
I’ve been doing stuff with my printer, but it keeps frying itself when I change the main board. I’ve replaced the main board thrice, and it works for a minute or two before it shorts and burns again.” I’m confused and wondering if I connected the necessary things correctly. Can you please show me pictures of your internal setup to see if I have done it correctly?

Answer:
Thank you for writing with your question. I’m sorry you’ve waited for a response — I can imagine how urgent and frustrating this situation feels. Unfortunately, we currently do not have a printer with a similar layout to yours to give you pictures of the internal connections. But now let us investigate why the main board in your printer may keep burning up and what you can do about it:

Main Board Burnout and Its Common Causes

  • Short-Circuiting or Electrical Problems: This is the most common reason a main board fails multiple times. Examine all wiring and connectors closely for damaged insulation, frayed wires, or loose connections that could create an unintended electrical route.
  • Power Supply Issues: If the power supply is flaky or incompatible, it may output bulk voltage/current, overloading the primary board. Check the power supply’s output with a multimeter and ensure it is correct for your printer’s needs.
  • Checking part compatibility: Ensure that the replacement motherboards you’re using are compatible with your printer model/type and the type of power it requires. Using the wrong board will cause instant failure.
  • Grounding Problems: Poor grounding can lead to static buildup or voltage surges that can destroy sensitive components like the main board. Please check all ground connections for proper tightness and installation.

Ways to Stop Future Burnout

  • Open to Check for Damage: Before replacing the main board again, inspect every single area of the printer for signs of damage, overheating, or something placed incorrectly in it.
  • Consult Technical Documentation: Cross-reference your connections with your printer’s service manual or wiring diagram to verify that all connections have been made correctly. If you don’t have access to these, similar models may be available in useful formats online.
  • Checking Components: If you have access to a multimeter, you can check additional components (e.g., motors, sensors) connected to the board for shorts (or other abnormal resistance) that may be causing the board to fail.

If you want a reference in video format, you can look at our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). We uploaded several tutorials on how to fix various failures, which may give you some tips and better context. Although the specific model may use different procedures, these videos usually focus on general troubleshooting and repair methods that relate to your situation.

Because of how hands-on printer issues can be, addressing them is a bit of work. So, we can’t give you remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. In-person evaluation and repair are available from our area diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service), but are provided on a first-come first-served basis due to overwhelming demand. It will take some weeks before your printer can drop it to you. We have plans to remediate your entire printer or details to get you started. But we know our rates are not the cheapest. Hence, we advise you to use the self-help method through web searching. For example, you can start right now by going to YouTube or our very own YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies) and searching specific videos by clicking on the search icon next to "About" on the top right of the menu bar. I get dozens of daily questions asking to see videos related to particular subjects. It's hard to keep track of every one of them over nine years of making videos. So, using the search function on youtube.com will be the quickest. YouTube could also recommend videos on the same topic from other channels that might help you.

Thanks again for your question. I hope these tips help you get started! Let us know how it goes, and feel free to reach out for additional support!
