Epson ET-8700 Scanner Error 190000 and Black Ink Printing Problems

Question:
I have owned my Epson ET-8700 for several years, and up until recently, the printing function was just about all I used it for. But I started getting "Scanner Error 190000" out of the blue while printing continued to work perfectly. For the past few months, I've also had a problem with black ink. There are no or very light black prints, but the color prints are excellent. Why is this happening, and how can I resolve it?

So you say Scanner Error 190000 and black ink don't print, which are two different but related problems you have described. Let's unpack these and take them one by one:

Scanner Error 190000 (ADF/SCN error code 11)
This error usually means your printer's scanning mechanism is not correctly calibrated. Error 190000 usually occurs when the Epson printer cannot read the image correctly. There are several potential reasons for this:

  • CIS Module Failure: The CIS (Contact Image Sensor) module that reads the scan might have issues. This is a frequent source of scan errors.
  • Main Board Failure: In some cases, the main board, which controls the scanner, may also be malfunctioning.
  • FFC Disconnection in ADF/SCN: The FFCs connecting the ADF or SCN module to the central board might be incorrectly connected or broken.

Error: 190000, Scanner Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Read FFCs of the ADF/SCN Unit: Verify that the FFC (the thick cable) that connects to the ADF/SCN unit is fully inserted, not unplugged. Reconnect or replace the FFC if it seems damaged or misaligned.
  • Replace the ADF/SCN Unit: If the error continues after you confirm that the FFCs are correctly connected, it may be time to replace the ADF/SCN unit.
  • Replace the Main Board Assy: If ADF/SCN unit replacement does not solve the problem, the Main Board could be faulty. This may require replacing the main board assembly.

If these steps do not fix the problem, you might need to contact Epson's service department for additional support.

Black Ink Printing Issues:
As for the issue of fading or missing black ink, while color prints are reasonable, they usually result from clogged nozzles in the printhead itself, especially for the black ink channel. Although your printer works in color, the black ink system might still be blocked. Here's what you can do about this:

BLACK INK TIPS:

  • Printing Out The Nozzle Pattern: Open your printer Maintenance Menu from either the control panel or your computer printer software and select Nozzle Check. Identify the gaps or missing lines in the black ink part of the pattern.
  • Printhead Cleaning: If there are noticeable missing lines or gaps within the nozzle pattern, a printhead cleaning must be performed. Most Epson printers include a built-in cleaning utility for minor clogs. This can be found under the Maintenance Menu. Run the cleaning cycle, then print another nozzle check test to check if the issue is resolved.

Note: Avoid using the cleaning utility more than two consecutive times — this can use up ink. Let the printer sit for 12 hours before cleaning again.

Use the Power Cleaning Utility (If Available): If you have a particularly stubborn clog, Epson EcoTank printers offer a Power Cleaning option. This option uses more ink but is more effective as a blockage is clearer. Make sure all the ink tanks have enough ink to run this cycle.

Clean the Printhead Manually with a Syringe and Tube: If the problem still exists, you might have to clean the printhead manually. Here's how:

Materials Needed:

  • A syringe (without a needle)
  • A small flexible tube
  • A printer-friendly cleaning solution or distilled water

Procedure:

  • You can remove the removable printhead (refer to your printer's manual) or access it from the ink inlet ports.
  • Attach the tube back to its syringe, fill it with cleaning solution, and gently push the ink out of the blocked nozzle.
  • If so, reinstall the printhead and run another nozzle check to see whether the black ink flows as it should.

Clean Capping Station and Wiper Blade: The capping station and wiper blade also play a crucial role in printhead health. Ink can dry, build up, and cause clogs over time. To clean them:

  • Turn off and unplug the printer.
  • To remove dried-up ink or debris from the capping station and wiper blade, dab a lint-free cloth or cotton swab in distilled water and clean them thoroughly.

Preventing Future Clogs:
Here are some tips to prolong the life of your Epson printer and prevent it from clogging in the future.

  • To prevent the nozzles from getting clogged, please print frequently.
  • Use high-volume, printer model-compatible ink.
  • Ensure your printer is kept in an environment with stable temperatures and humidity; extreme changes can impact the TPH performance.
