Will BCH MaxStrength™ RED Cleaning Solution Work on a 10-Year-Old Canon MX922 Print Head?

Question

I have a Canon MX922 print head that has been in use for about 10 years. I am looking at the BCH MaxStrength™ RED Professional Cleaning Solution for water-based ink printers. Will this solution work for cleaning or unclogging my Canon MX922 print head?

Answer

For your Canon MX922 print head, I would not say with certainty that any cleaning solution will definitely work or definitely not work. The honest answer is: maybe. A cleaning solution can help if the problem is caused by dried ink, partial clogging, or ink buildup inside the print head. However, if the print head is electrically damaged, internally burned out, delaminated, or physically worn after years of use, then no cleaning solution will be able to restore it.

The Canon MX922 uses Canon's five-cartridge ink system, which includes both dye-based and pigment-based inks. This matters because the type of ink affects how difficult the clog may be to remove.

The color cartridges are generally dye-based. Dye ink usually dissolves more easily in a proper water-based print head cleaning solution. If the cyan, magenta, yellow, or photo black channels are clogged, they may respond better to soaking, flushing, or repeated cleaning cycles, depending on how severe the clog is.

The larger black cartridge, commonly used for text printing, is pigment-based. Pigment ink is more difficult to clean because it contains tiny solid particles suspended in liquid. When pigment ink dries, it can form a tougher blockage than dye ink. Because of that, the pigment black channel on a Canon MX922 print head is often harder to unclog than the color channels. If your missing output is from the pigment black grid on the nozzle check, the cleaning process may take longer and may not always succeed.

The BCH MaxStrength™ RED Professional Cleaning Solution is designed for water-based ink systems, so it is generally appropriate for printers that use water-based dye or pigment inks, such as many Canon, Epson, Brother, and HP inkjet printers. Since the Canon MX922 uses water-based ink cartridges, the cleaning solution is a reasonable product to try if you suspect the problem is clog-related. However, the age of the print head is an important factor. A 10-year-old print head may have more than just dried ink inside it. It may have electrical aging, heat damage, internal corrosion, or a weakened nozzle plate.

Before using cleaning solution, I would suggest checking the nozzle pattern first. If some lines are missing but others are still printing, that usually suggests a clog or partial blockage. If an entire color is missing, it could still be a clog, but it may also be caused by poor cartridge ink flow, a bad cartridge seal, air in the ink path, or a failed print head channel. If the printer gives an error such as B200, U052, 1403, or 1405, those are often print head-related errors and may indicate a more serious electrical or recognition problem rather than a simple clog.

For the Canon MX922, a B200 error is commonly associated with print head failure, overheating, or an electrical issue between the print head and printer. Cleaning may help only if the issue is caused by ink blockage causing overheating, but if the print head electronics are damaged, cleaning solution will not fix it. A U052 error usually means the printer is not recognizing the print head correctly or believes the installed print head is incorrect. Errors 1403 or 1405 can also relate to print head recognition or print head failure. In those cases, cleaning the nozzles may not solve the issue unless the contacts are dirty or the print head was not seated properly.

If your printer is not showing a print head error and the problem is only poor print quality, missing lines, banding, or missing colors, then cleaning is more likely to be worth trying. You can remove the print head and gently clean it using the solution, but avoid soaking the electronic contacts or the circuit board area. The goal is to clean the ink intake screens and nozzle area, not drown the entire electronic assembly. Also, do not use boiling water, harsh solvents, alcohol-heavy cleaners, ammonia-heavy mixtures, or excessive pressure, because those can damage the print head membrane or internal layers.

For a stubborn clog, especially in the pigment black channel, you may need patience. A short soak may not be enough if the ink has been dried for a long time. Sometimes repeated gentle soaking and flushing over several hours or overnight can loosen the blockage. However, forcing solution through the print head with too much pressure can rupture internal seals or cross-contaminate channels. If the print head starts leaking between colors, prints strange mixed colors, or cannot produce a proper nozzle check after cleaning, the internal structure may already be compromised.

Also check the cartridges themselves. Sometimes the print head is blamed when the cartridge is actually not feeding ink properly. A dried vent, empty cartridge, poor sponge saturation, bad aftermarket cartridge, or blocked outlet can mimic a clogged print head. If possible, test with known-good cartridges before deciding the print head is the only problem.

So, in short: yes, the BCH MaxStrength™ RED Cleaning Solution is a reasonable option to try on a Canon MX922 print head because the printer uses water-based ink. The dye-based color channels may be easier to recover, while the pigment black channel may be much more difficult. However, because the print head is 10 years old, there is no guarantee that cleaning will restore it. If the issue is an electrical print head failure or a print head error such as B200, U052, 1403, or 1405, cleaning may not solve the problem.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair because many of these problems require hands-on inspection. For that reason, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting, detailed repair suggestions, or remote support for individual printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility, BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service [https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service]. Due to high demand, this service is handled on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks before we can schedule your printer for drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either the whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we understand that our rates may not be the most economical option for every situation. Because of that, we strongly recommend self-help through online research whenever possible. A good starting point is YouTube, including our channel homepage, BCH Technologies on YouTube [https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies]. Once you are on our channel, use the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar to look for specific topics. I receive dozens of questions every day asking for videos on particular subjects, and after creating videos for more than nine years, it is difficult to remember every single one. YouTube's search function is usually the most efficient way to find the right video, and it may also suggest helpful videos from other creators.

Thank you again for reaching out and for considering BCH Technologies products. I hope this helps you decide whether cleaning the Canon MX922 print head is worth trying before replacing the print head or moving on to another printer.
