Why Is My Printer Feeding Blank Pages with No Printing?

Question:
My printer seems to be functioning normally, but every time I try to print, it only sends out blank sheets of paper-no ink, no smudges, just completely blank pages. What could be causing this issue?

Answer:

1. Empty or Dried Ink Cartridges

The most common reason for printing blank pages is dried or empty cartridges. Even if your printer shows ink levels as normal, dried ink inside the cartridge's nozzles can block ink flow. Try running the printer's built-in "Nozzle Check" or "Print Head Cleaning" function-usually found under Maintenance or Settings.

  • If the nozzle check prints blank or incomplete patterns, run one or two more cleaning cycles.

  • If the issue persists, remove the cartridges and inspect the bottom for dried ink buildup.

  • Clean the cartridge nozzles gently with a lint-free cloth dampened in warm distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (70%).

2. Print Head Clogging or Air in the Ink Lines

For printers with separate ink tanks or continuous ink systems (CISS/DTF setups), air bubbles in the ink lines can interrupt ink delivery. When this happens, you may hear the printer operating, but no ink reaches the paper.

  • Perform a head cleaning or ink charging cycle to purge air.

  • If you're using refillable cartridges, make sure the vent holes are open-these allow proper ink flow.

  • For Epson EcoTank and similar models, inspect the ink tubes to ensure they're filled evenly with ink and have no large air gaps.

3. Incorrect Cartridge Installation or Firmware Issues

If you recently replaced or refilled your cartridges, check that they're seated properly in the carriage. Misalignment or poor contact between the chip and the printer can result in blank printing.

  • Remove and reinstall the cartridges carefully.

  • Power cycle the printer after reinstalling to reset detection.

  • Some printers may throw error codes like E-11, E-03, or 0x97, which often relate to communication or print head recognition issues. Clearing these typically involves turning off the printer, unplugging it for 10 minutes, then restarting.

4. Driver or Software Malfunction

A corrupted printer driver or incorrect print settings can also cause blank pages.

  • Reinstall your printer driver or update it from the manufacturer's website.

  • Ensure you're not accidentally printing in "Economy," "Grayscale," or "Blank Page Skip" mode.

  • If printing from a PDF or image file, try converting it to a different format before printing to rule out software corruption.

5. Hardware Problems (Print Head Failure)

If none of the above fixes restore printing, your print head may be electrically damaged-especially if the printer has been sitting unused for an extended period or was cleaned with excessive pressure or harsh solvents.

  • A failed print head can cause all colors, including black, to stop firing simultaneously, leading to pure blank pages.

  • Replacing or professionally cleaning the print head might be necessary in this case.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before your printer can be dropped off. Our services cover both full printer repairs and individual component diagnostics, with clear next steps provided. However, we understand that professional repair isn't always the most economical option. For many users, we recommend self-help through research-starting with our BCH Technologies YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies).
