I watched your video about disassembling and taking apart an Epson multifunction inkjet printer. What type and size of screwdriver bits do I need? Are Torx screws required, and what measurements should I look for?

For most Epson inkjet and multifunction printers, you usually do not need a Torx screwdriver for routine disassembly. Epson commonly uses Phillips-head screws throughout the printer.

The two most useful screwdriver sizes are:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver: Used for most standard exterior, frame, chassis, scanner-unit, and housing screws.

  • Phillips #1 screwdriver: Used for smaller or more delicate screws around circuit boards, sensors, printhead components, cable brackets, control panels, and other compact assemblies.

A medium-length Phillips #2 screwdriver will handle many of the larger screws found on Epson printers. A Phillips #1 precision screwdriver is helpful when working in tighter spaces or removing smaller screws. In some models, an extra-long screwdriver shaft can also be useful because certain screws are recessed deep inside the printer frame.

Although people sometimes refer to any star-shaped or cross-shaped screw as a Torx screw, most of the screws visible in common Epson desktop printers are actually Phillips screws. Before purchasing Torx bits, inspect the screw head closely:

  • A Phillips screw has a cross-shaped recess.

  • A Torx screw has a six-pointed star-shaped recess.

  • A Pozidriv screw resembles a Phillips screw but has additional smaller lines between the main cross slots.

Using the wrong driver can strip the screw head. A Phillips #2 bit may fit into a smaller screw but can damage it if excessive pressure is applied. Similarly, a Phillips #1 screwdriver may feel loose in a larger screw and can round off the screw head.

During disassembly, organize the screws by section because Epson often uses screws with similar-looking heads but different lengths. A long screw installed in the wrong location can damage wiring, plastic housings, circuit boards, or moving parts. Taking photos before removing each assembly can make reinstallation much easier.
