Question:
I need help with my Epson printers. The Epson 9800 acts like it’s printing, but the pages are blank. My Epson 4880 shows a service error code 00010004. I’ve replaced the encoder sensor, strip, carriage, locking mechanism, and motor. What could be the issue?
Answer:
Epson 9800 Printing Blank Pages
When a printer behaves as if it’s printing—mechanically functioning, media moving—but no ink appears on the page, there are a few potential root causes to investigate:
1. Capping Station Issues
The capping station protects the printhead and assists in priming and cleaning. If it’s dried out, misaligned, or not sealing correctly, it can cause ink starvation at the head. Visually inspect the station for cleanliness and proper function.
2. Ink Supply Problems
Check that the ink lines are not filled with air and that all cartridges are properly seated with working chips. On large-format Epson printers, ink flow issues may also stem from clogged dampers or dried-up ink lines.
3. Fuse on the Mainboard
A blown fuse on the mainboard, particularly those controlling the printhead, can prevent the head from firing even if it moves correctly. You’ll need to test continuity on the fuses to confirm.
4. Driver IC Failure on the Mainboard
The driver IC (Integrated Circuit) commanding the nozzles may be defective. If this component is burned or malfunctioning, it can prevent ink ejection. This often requires professional diagnosis or mainboard replacement.
Epson 4880 Service Error 00010004
This specific error is a CR Motor Encoder Check Error, and it relates directly to how the printer reads carriage movement via the encoder strip and sensor. Even though you’ve replaced several components already, here are some additional steps to double-check and insights that might help:
1. Carriage Locking Mechanism
Service errors in the range of 00010004 to 000101D often relate to carriage travel problems. A partially engaged carriage lock tab—such as after a paper jam or manual intervention—can physically drag or obstruct the carriage. Ensure the lock tab is pulled fully to the left and is not causing any drag.
2. Manual Carriage Check
Turn off the printer and manually release the carriage by pressing down on the cutter blade. Then gently slide the carriage left and right across the rail. Remove any paper bits or obstructions and ensure the carriage slides freely without resistance. Clean and lubricate the rail if needed.
3. Encoder Strip & Sensor Inspection
Even new parts can be defective or installed incorrectly. Double-check that the encoder strip is tensioned correctly and clean of dust or oil. The encoder sensor must also be properly aligned and securely connected to the carriage board.
4. CR Cable Condition
The CR (Carriage Return) cable connects the carriage assembly to the mainboard. Damaged, kinked, or improperly seated cables can cause communication issues that result in 00010004 errors. Inspect and re-seat the cable ends. Consider replacing it if there's any visible wear.
Additional Support Note
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we cannot provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. It may take a few weeks to get your printer to drop it off. Our services are structured to repair a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be most efficient. Plus, YouTube might suggest relevant videos from other channels that could assist you.
