Resolving Epson XP-15000 Error 033007 and Protecting Your Printer

Question:
I have an Epson XP-15000 that wasn’t recognizing a cartridge. I disassembled the CSIC chip connector to clean it, but after reassembling, I’m now seeing error code 033007. Could this be due to a disconnected cable, or did I damage the FFC cable? What should I do?

Answer:

033007 — Also known as "Write parity error" indicates a mainboard failure. More specifically, it indicates a problem where the printer attempts to write firmware onto the mainboard, but encounters an EEPROM write parity failure. Luckily this error doesn't have anything to do with what you are doing on the CSIC chip connector. It turns out that you probably have the automatic firmware update for your printer enabled.

Epson regularly rolls out firmware updates that lock out such cartridges and which give little or no benefit to the end-user. Such updates can, unfortunately, create errors like this and even destroy the printer in certain cases. Many users are unaware that automatic updates are enabled by default. If you are using third-party cartridges, such updates can cause incompatibility, errors, or even damage caused by communication problems between the printer and cartridge.

Disabling Firmware Updates

You can disable automatic updates to avoid similar problems in the future. For Windows users:

  • Do not check “update” during installation, and do not allow Epson utilities to go around your firewall.
  • Disable automatic update checks after installation. Do this on every computer connected to the printer.

If you're more advanced, you could also block the "EventManager Application" in your firewall to entirely prevent updates. You have to set this up correctly though, since most firewalls will consider updates to be malicious.

Finally, if you are experiencing the 033007 error, what you should do is downgrade the firmware of the printer or reset the printer to the factory state. It necessitates specialized tools such as WICReset or Adjustment Programs. These are somewhat complicated steps, but they are confident enough to solve firmware related problems.

Additional Guidance:

Typically, printer errors such as 033007 are linked to conflicting system firmware, something that needs to be addressed in-person. But sadly these kind of issues cannot be troubleshot remotely.
