Question:
I accidentally damaged my printer and now need to replace the motherboard. I plan to buy one online, but I’ll need to install the firmware and NVRAM. How can I do this? Are there pre-installed options available?
Answer:
Replacing and Installing a New Motherboard
Setting up your new printer motherboard is going to differ greatly based on where you buy it from:
Third-Party Mainboard (Not Epson)
- If you purchased the motherboard from an online marketplace or third-party vendor (not directly from Epson), the firmware is usually already installed. In this case:
- Put the motherboard into your printer.
- You may then upgrade the firmware in the printer when the printer boots up. Firmware updates are usually found in your printer’s settings or from Epson’s official website.
Epson or Authorized Distributors Mainboard
- Sometimes Epson’s distributors sell motherboards, without firmware installed, known as “blank boards.”
- Contact Before Purchase: They typically alert people that they want to buy and might ask for your credentials, like your permission to provide service or professional credentials, to make sure that you are a reliable service.
- What If Credentials Don’t Match: In case of invalid/credentials not meeting Epson’s spec, an advanced software will need to be run to put in the firmware.
Using Adjustment Software
Adjustment Software In theory, something that uses to install itself on a blank_board. Sadly, this software is model specific and practically impossible to get for printers such as, the Epson ET-8550. Even if you find a supplier of the software, be very careful if you use it, as it may be untrusted and be a security risk to your printer or your system.
Some third-party sellers sell motherboards with firmware and NVRAM already installed. Before you buy, check with the seller that the board is fully set up and ready to plug and play. This can help you save significant time and work.
General Installation Tips
NVRAM: Make sure to properly align the NVRAM and securely pin it on the new motherboard. Errors can occur due to improper installation.
Check After Installed: Then power on the printer, and place a couple of things to print, such as a test page, check if all the things are in place.
