HP Printer Black Ink Not Printing After Carriage Jam: Causes, Printhead Clogs, and Possible Fixes

I recently fixed a "Carriage Jam" problem on my HP printer after finding that a gear had started coming off. I pushed the gear back into place, and the carriage, paper-feed mechanism, and service/waste area began moving normally again.

Now I have a different problem. The printer sat for some time with the carriage near the waste/service area, and I think the black ink may have dried out or become clogged. The black ink does not print at all.

I have already tried two new black ink cartridges, replaced the other three color cartridges, turned the printer off and back on, unplugged it, and performed three printhead cleanings. The color cartridges print, but there is still no black ink on the Printer Status Report.

What could cause the black ink channel to stop printing even after installing new cartridges and running multiple cleaning cycles?

The fact that you successfully corrected the "Carriage Jam" problem by repositioning the loose gear is encouraging. Based on your new symptoms, however, the black-ink problem is probably separate from the cartridge itself.

Since you have already tried two different new black cartridges, while the other colors print normally, I would put the cartridge itself fairly low on the list of likely causes. The more likely possibilities are a blocked black printhead channel, a problem with ink delivery from the cartridge to the printhead, an issue with the service station/capping area, or an electrical failure affecting the black nozzles.

1. The Black Printhead Nozzles May Be Completely Dried or Clogged

Your suspicion about dried ink is certainly possible.

When a printer sits unused, especially for an extended period, ink remaining inside the microscopic printhead nozzles can begin to dry. Black ink can sometimes be particularly troublesome because many HP printers use a pigment-based black ink for text printing. Pigment particles can form a stubborn blockage when the ink dries.

A partially clogged printhead usually produces missing lines, streaking, or faded printing. However, if the entire black channel becomes blocked, you may get no black at all on the Printer Status Report.

The important clue in your case is that multiple black cartridges produce the same result. If the cartridge were the problem, replacing it would normally change the symptom. When two cartridges give absolutely no black output, the problem is more likely downstream from the cartridge.

2. Three Printhead Cleanings May Not Clear a Severe Blockage

You have already run three cleaning cycles, which was a reasonable thing to try.

However, the printer's automatic cleaning routine has limitations. It works by drawing or forcing a relatively small amount of ink through the nozzles. It can help with minor drying, but it may not remove a blockage that has hardened inside the black ink channel.

I would also avoid repeatedly running a large number of automatic cleanings one after another. Cleaning cycles consume a surprising amount of ink and send that ink into the printer's waste-ink/service-station system. If several cleaning cycles make absolutely no difference, continuing to run them usually has diminishing returns.

If the black section remains completely blank rather than improving slightly after cleaning, that increases the possibility of a severe blockage or a non-clog-related problem.

3. Check Whether the Black Cartridge Can Actually Deliver Ink

Even with a brand-new cartridge, ink still has to travel from the cartridge into the printhead.

Depending on the particular HP model, check for things such as protective shipping tape, an obstructed vent, improper cartridge seating, or contamination around the cartridge's ink outlet.

Some cartridges rely on a small air vent to allow ink to leave the cartridge properly. If that vent is blocked, a vacuum can develop inside the cartridge and prevent ink from flowing.

Since you have tested two black cartridges, it would be unusual for both cartridges to have exactly the same defect, but the printer-side connection where the black cartridge feeds the printhead could still be blocked.

4. The Black Ink Inlet on the Printhead Could Be Blocked

If your HP printer uses individual ink cartridges feeding a separate printhead, there is normally an ink inlet or filter associated with each color.

The black inlet can become clogged with dried or thickened ink. In that situation, installing a new black cartridge will not solve the problem because fresh ink cannot reach the black nozzles.

This is somewhat like installing a full water tank onto a pipe that is plugged downstream: the supply is available, but nothing can pass through.

If the cartridge is removed and the black ink inlet area appears unusually dry compared with the color inlets, that can sometimes be another indication that black ink is not being transferred correctly.

5. The Service Station or Capping Station Is Especially Important

The mechanism you described as the "waste thingy" is probably part of what is commonly called the printer's service station, maintenance station, or capping station.

This area can contain several components, depending on the printer:

  • A rubber cap that seals against the printhead when the printer is idle

  • A wiper that cleans the printhead surface

  • A pump or suction mechanism used during printhead cleaning

  • A waste-ink collection or absorber area

  • Gears that move the service-station components

This area is extremely important to printhead operation.

When the printer parks the carriage, the cap should form a reasonably good seal around the printhead. During a cleaning cycle, the printer may use the service station to create suction and pull ink through the printhead.

Because you previously had a Carriage Jam associated with a displaced gear, I would pay particular attention to this mechanism.

If that gear is involved in operating the service station, pushing it back into position may have restored movement without necessarily restoring the mechanism's exact timing or alignment.

For example, the carriage might now travel normally while the cap, wiper, or pumping mechanism still does not move through its full intended range.

If the service station cannot seal correctly against the printhead, the printer may be unable to create enough suction during cleaning. This could explain why three cleaning cycles produced no improvement.

It is also possible that the original mechanical problem prevented the printhead from being properly capped while the printer was sitting. If the black nozzle area remained exposed to air, the ink could have dried significantly.

6. Inspect the Bottom of the Printhead if the Design Allows It

If your particular HP model has a removable printhead, inspecting the nozzle plate can sometimes provide useful information.

Normally, a functioning printhead that has recently been printing will show some ink at the appropriate nozzle areas. If the black portion is heavily covered with dried residue, that supports the clogging theory.

Be very careful around the nozzle plate. The microscopic nozzles are delicate, and scratching or aggressively wiping the surface can permanently damage the printhead.

Also avoid touching electrical contacts unnecessarily. Oils from your fingers or moisture from cleaning liquids can introduce additional problems.

7. A Manual Printhead Cleaning May Be Needed

If ordinary automatic cleaning does nothing, some users move to manual printhead cleaning.

The exact procedure depends heavily on the printer model and whether the printhead is removable. This is important because a cleaning method that is appropriate for one printhead design may damage another.

With removable printheads, technicians sometimes work with an appropriate printhead-cleaning solution to soften dried ink around the nozzle plate or ink inlet. The objective is to dissolve the blockage rather than force excessive pressure through the printhead.

Excessive pressure is particularly dangerous. Forcing liquid through a printhead with a syringe can rupture internal membranes, separate internal layers, damage nozzle chambers, or push contamination further into the printhead.

If you attempt any cleaning procedure found online, I recommend finding instructions specifically for your exact HP printer or printhead model rather than following a generic procedure.

8. Do Not Overlook the Possibility of an Electrical Failure

A completely blank black section does not always mean that the black channel is physically clogged.

The printhead contains microscopic firing elements that eject droplets of ink. Depending on the HP printhead design, a failure in the black nozzle circuitry can cause the printer to feed ink normally while producing no black output.

Possible electrical causes include:

  • Damaged printhead contacts

  • Contaminated electrical contacts

  • A damaged flex cable

  • Corrosion

  • A failed portion of the printhead

  • A damaged carriage-board connection

  • Internal electrical failure in the black nozzle array

This distinction matters because cleaning cannot repair an electrically failed printhead.

One indication can be the total lack of improvement after cleaning. A physical clog may eventually begin producing a few black lines or broken patterns as it opens. An electrically dead channel may remain completely blank regardless of how much ink is available.

That is not a definitive test, but it is useful diagnostically.

9. Check the Electrical Contacts Between the Printhead and Carriage

If the printhead is removable, examine its electrical contacts and the corresponding contacts inside the carriage.

Ink contamination, oxidation, or residue can interfere with communication between the carriage electronics and printhead.

If cleaning electrical contacts is appropriate for your model, they should be handled very carefully and allowed to dry completely before the printer is powered on again.

Because the other three colors are working, a complete communication failure is unlikely. However, a localized failure affecting part of the printhead circuitry remains possible.

10. The Previous Carriage Jam Could Have Affected More Than the Gear

There is another reason I would not completely separate the current problem from the previous Carriage Jam.

If the carriage or service station was mechanically jammed, components may have been placed under unusual stress. Depending on the printer's construction, that could affect:

  • The printhead flex cable

  • The service-station timing

  • The wiper position

  • The capping mechanism

  • The purge pump

  • The carriage alignment

  • The printhead itself

If the service station was stuck in an unusual position while the printer remained unused, the printhead may also have been left improperly sealed.

Therefore, even though the printer now moves normally, I would inspect the repaired gear and surrounding mechanism carefully to make sure the service station completes its entire movement rather than simply confirming that the carriage can travel from side to side.

11. The Printer Status Report Is a Very Useful Test

You mentioned that black is also missing from the Printer Status Report. That is an important detail.

Because a printer-generated status report does not rely on your computer's application settings in the same way a normal document does, this makes a software, driver, font, or computer configuration problem much less likely.

In other words, because the printer itself cannot produce black on its own internal report, I would concentrate troubleshooting inside the printer rather than reinstalling printer drivers or changing computer settings.

12. What I Would Suspect First

Based on everything you described, I would investigate the problem roughly in this order:

  1. Severely dried or clogged black printhead channel

  2. Black ink inlet or internal ink path blockage

  3. Service station/capping/pumping mechanism not operating correctly after the gear problem

  4. Poor contact or another electrical issue affecting the black nozzle circuit

  5. Permanent failure of the black section of the printhead

Because two new black cartridges have already been tested, I would not continue purchasing additional cartridges unless there is specific evidence that the replacements are defective.

I would pay especially close attention to the service station and the gear you repaired. Verify not only that the gear stays on its shaft but also that the surrounding mechanism moves correctly through its entire cycle. A gear that has moved axially on a shaft can sometimes indicate a worn retaining feature, cracked gear, worn shaft, missing retainer, or excessive mechanical resistance elsewhere in the mechanism. Simply pushing it back may temporarily restore operation without correcting whatever caused it to move in the first place.

If the gear comes off again, that would be another indication that the underlying mechanical problem remains.
