How to Use Dampers on Epson XP-15000 Printers - Rubber Plug or Puncture?

Question:
I just got new dampers for my Epson XP-15000, but I'm confused about how they work. Am I supposed to remove the rubber plug before installation, or should I leave it in and poke a hole in it with a needle?

Answer:

1. Purpose of the Rubber Plug Membrane

2. How It's Supposed to Work

  • When you push the damper onto the printer's ink intake nipple, the nipple itself is designed to puncture the rubber membrane.

  • Once punctured, the nipple forms a tight seal with the rubber, preventing leaks while allowing ink to flow normally.

3. What Happens If It Doesn't Puncture Properly

  • Sometimes, the nipple does not pierce the membrane fully, leaving the ink blocked.

  • If this happens, you may see air in the line, no ink flow, or a "starvation" issue in that color channel.

4. The Fix - Manual Puncture

  • If the damper's membrane isn't punctured automatically, you can manually pierce it with a long, sharp needle or similar tool before installing.

  • Be careful to make only a small, clean puncture. Avoid tearing or removing the membrane entirely, since you still need it to seal tightly around the nipple.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not remove the rubber plug completely. Without it, you lose the sealing mechanism, and leaks are likely.

  • Do not enlarge the puncture hole too much. A large hole may cause ink to backflow or air leaks.

Addressing installation issues like damper sealing can be tricky, since it requires hands-on adjustments and precise handling. For that reason, we aren't able to provide remote troubleshooting or direct repair for damper installations. However, we do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). This service operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and because of high demand, it may take several weeks before we can process your printer. We repair both full printers and individual components, though we acknowledge that our rates may not always be the most economical. For many users, the best option is to start with self-help research. A great place to begin is our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies).
