How to Restore Black Ink Flow on an Epson ST-2000 After Long Periods of Inactivity

Question:
A customer explains that they rotate between two work locations every 30 days, leaving one Epson ST-2000 idle for a month at a time. Normally, after returning, they run 2-3 nozzle checks/head cleanings and everything prints fine. However, this time the printer abruptly stopped printing black only, while all color channels still print perfectly. After reading about BCH Technologies' Concentrated Print Head Maintenance Wetter Solution, they want to know whether this product can help in their situation. Their questions are:
-
Since the ST-2000 is an EcoTank printer, how does the maintenance solution process work?
-
Do they need a special MT "local cartridge" for this model?
-
If running cleanings pulls both solution and ink, how does the printer manage this?
-
Is it possible to push cleaning solution directly through the black printhead using a syringe and tubing, after removing the internal "local" cartridge?
Answer:
Below is a detailed, step-by-step explanation of how EcoTank printhead flow works, why black may drop out after sitting idle, and how our maintenance solution can be applied safely on your ST-2000.
Why Black Stops Printing After Sitting 30 Days
On Epson EcoTank printers (including the ST-2000), the black channel is more prone to drying because:
-
Black pigment particles can settle or compact when unused
-
The "local cartridge" (also called the ink delivery module) can dry internally even if the tank is full
-
Air bubbles can form in the feed line
-
The capping station may partially dry out, reducing priming power
This is why returning after 30 days often requires 2-3 cleanings.
In your case, the blockage likely became more severe and the normal cleaning cycles couldn't restore the black channel.
Understanding the EcoTank "Local Cartridge"
EcoTank printers do not accept MT cartridges. Instead, each color has:
-
A fixed internal ink chamber
-
A small damper inside the printhead assembly
-
Tubing that feeds the chamber from the ink tank
So the "cartridge flushing" method used on cartridge-based printers does not apply to EcoTank models like the ST-2000.
Because the local cartridge/damper is sealed and built into the printhead system, cleaning must be done differently.
Your Questions Answered
A. Do you need an MT "local" cartridge?
No. EcoTank printers do not use MT cartridges.
The ST-2000 has an internal ink reservoir (sometimes called the "sub-tank" or "local cartridge"), but it is:
-
Not removable
-
Not refillable separately
-
Not replaceable with an MT cartridge
So that part of the instructions does not apply to EcoTank models.
B. If you run head cleanings with solution in the tank, how does it work?
Yes-running head cleanings will pull solution through the black printhead, but here is what actually happens:
-
You temporarily fill the black tank compartment with the properly diluted maintenance solution.
-
The printer performs two or more head cleanings.
-
During those cleanings, the pump pulls cleaning solution from the tank into the internal ink chamber.
-
The solution then moves through the printhead nozzles, helping dissolve dried pigment or break up airlocks.
-
After cleaning cycles, normal ink will slowly refill the internal chamber as you print or run more cleans.
The key point is:
The cleaning solution replaces the black ink temporarily during the cleanings.
Once you refill the tank with ink and print a few pages, the internal chamber will purge the remaining solution and return to normal.
C. Can you push cleaning solution manually with a syringe and tubing?
Technically, yes-but we strongly advise caution.
EcoTank heads do not have removable dampers like upper-end printers. Accessing the ink port requires:
-
Opening the printer
-
Disconnecting the tubing
-
Attaching a tight-fit syringe connection
-
Applying controlled pressure
Too much pressure can:
-
Delaminate the printhead membrane
-
Blow out channels
-
Cause permanent damage
This is why syringe flushing is considered a last resort, only when all other methods fail.
For most ST-2000 clogging issues, using maintenance solution through the tank system is both safer and effective.
Recommended Procedure for Your ST-2000
Based on the symptoms (colors printing fine, black completely missing), you likely have:
-
A compacted pigment blockage
-
A trapped air pocket
-
Or a dried internal damper
The safest method is:
-
Mix the maintenance solution to the correct dilution.
-
Empty the black tank (as completely as you can).
-
Fill the black tank with the diluted solution.
-
Run two head cleanings.
-
Let the printer sit for 2-3 hours to allow penetration.
-
Run another cleaning, if needed.
-
Empty the tank and refill with black ink.
-
Print 5-10 pages of dense black to purge the system.
This method often restores the black channel without exposing the printhead to mechanical pressure.
