How to Reset Waste Ink Counter and Install an External Tank on Epson Stylus Photo RX640

Question:
I want to know more about resetting the waste ink counter and using an external waste tank on my Epson Stylus Photo RX640. Does the procedure require using the Epson Adjustment Program's sequential adjustment mode to tell the printer that the waste ink pad has been removed? When re-routing the waste ink tube to an external tank, should I keep the built-in ink pad inlet open or closed? Do you have a video that shows this procedure? Also, do you have a service or repair center in the UK?

Answer:

1. Service Availability in the UK

Unfortunately, BCH Technologies does not currently have a service or repair center in the UK. Our repair facility is based in the United States, and at this time we cannot accept printers shipped from abroad.

2. Resetting the Waste Ink Counter

Epson printers, including the RX640, are programmed with a waste ink counter that tracks how much ink has been flushed through cleaning cycles. When it reaches a set limit, the printer will display a "Service Required" error message.

To clear this error, you will need the Epson Adjustment Program (sometimes referred to as the Service or Reset Utility). Within that program, the "Waste Ink Pad Counter Reset" function is the correct option. The sequential adjustment mode can be used, but the important part is performing the reset so the printer recognizes that the counter is back at zero. Without this reset, even if you physically redirect the ink, the printer will remain locked with an error.

3. Installing an External Waste Ink Tank

When you re-route the waste ink tube:

  • Disconnect the tube from the internal pad and guide it into a sealed external container (often called a waste ink tank).

  • Seal or close off the opening where the tube originally connected to the internal pad. If left open, ink could leak inside the printer, causing serious damage.

  • Ensure the external tank is placed lower than the printer, so gravity can assist with proper ink drainage.

4. Videos and Tutorials

We have produced many videos on related procedures on our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). While we may not have one specifically dedicated to the RX640, you can search within the channel by clicking the search icon on the channel homepage and entering terms like "waste ink tank" or "reset Epson waste counter". YouTube may also suggest similar instructional videos from other creators that cover this model.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Because of this, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service) at our local diagnostic facility in the United States. Please note that we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can service your printer once dropped off. Our services can cover either full repairs or part-specific repairs, but we recognize that our rates may not always be the most cost-effective option. For this reason, we highly recommend starting with self-help resources such as online research or tutorials. Our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies) is a great place to begin-use the built-in search feature to find relevant guides, as we have produced hundreds of videos over the past nine years.

Thank you again for contacting us and for supporting BCH Technologies. We truly value your interest and hope this guidance helps you move forward with your Epson Stylus Photo RX640.
