Answer:
Epson ET-8550 | Replacing the Paper Width FFC Cable
The paper-width FFC cable of the P800 or the EP-805A is not an easy change in the ET-8550 printer, and I agree with you that, at first glance, it seems impossible. The printhead carriage can get in the way, and there isn’t much room to maneuver. It’s not a lot of fun. But with the right approach, it can be done. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll have to do:
Preparation:
- Before you begin, make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged. Working with electronic components also requires utmost care.
- If you are replacing the paper-width FFC cable, you must carefully remove the existing cable. Note where the cable goes; you will need that information for re-assembly.
How to access the Printhead carriage:
Due to the paper-width FFC cable connected to the printhead carriage, this can also be a cramped space to work in. You’ll probably have to remove the cover around the printhead area to access it better.
When you do take it off, you should see the cable linking the printhead to the motherboard. Handle the cable carefully to prevent damage
Removing the Old FFC Cable:
- FFC cables are channeled into place and often locked in with some clip. Ease up or release the clip to remove the old cable.
- Note the orientation of the cable and connector; this will be important when you install the new one.
Installing the New FFC Cable:
- Feed the new cable through the same path as the old one. It's difficult because the space around the printhead carriage is so narrow, but it can be accomplished with patience and a steady hand.
- Ensure the cable is fully seated in the connector before securing it. Loose connections will cause you issues down the line.
Reassembling the Printer:
- After installing the new FFC cable, put anything you had to disassemble to reach the printhead carriage back together.
- Turn on the printer and perform a test to make sure the paper width sensor works correctly.
