Question:
I recently bought a Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS) tank from another company, but I'm having trouble getting the ink to flow properly through my printer. Even after trying several times, my white ink still won't flow, and now I'm also experiencing paper jams. Is there anything you can do to take a look at it, or any advice before I bring it in for a repair?
Answer:
At BCH Technologies, we're grateful for your engagement and support, particularly through our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Your feedback helps us refine our technical content and expand the depth of our troubleshooting expertise.
Now, let's get into your issue.
Understanding Ink Flow Problems in CISS Systems
When using third-party CISS systems, several factors can cause ink flow issues - especially with white ink, which is thicker and more prone to settling or clogging. Here are some common reasons and how to address them:
-
Air Bubbles or Vacuum Locks:
If air enters the ink line, it can interrupt flow. Make sure the CISS tanks are at the same height as the printer's printhead when operating. If the tanks are placed too high or too low, gravity can create back pressure or vacuum locks that stop ink from flowing.-
Fix: Use a syringe to gently pull ink through the line until it reaches the printhead. If your system has air filters, ensure they are installed on the correct vent holes, not the ink outlet holes.
-
-
Settled or Thickened White Ink:
White ink is pigment-based and heavier than other colors, so it tends to settle quickly. Once it thickens, it can clog the lines or dampers.-
Fix: Shake the white ink tanks regularly (at least once a day) to keep the pigment suspended. If the ink has been sitting unused for a while, consider replacing it with fresh ink.
-
-
Clogged Printhead or Dampers:
If the ink lines are fine but nothing is printing, your dampers or printhead nozzles might be clogged. This is especially common when switching ink brands or types.-
Fix: Run a few cleaning cycles, but avoid excessive cleaning - it wastes ink and can overfill the waste pad. For stubborn clogs, use a printhead cleaning solution compatible with your printer model.
-
-
Improper Tube Installation or Leaks:
Check that the tubing is firmly connected, not pinched, and that there are no leaks or loose fittings. Even a small air gap can block ink flow.-
Fix: Reseat all tubes and ensure the CISS cartridges are correctly inserted into the printer.
-
Addressing Paper Jams After CISS Installation
Paper jams can sometimes occur as a side effect of CISS installation if the ink lines obstruct the paper path or if residual ink or cleaning solution has splattered onto the rollers.
-
Fix: Open the printer and make sure the ribbon tubing doesn't interfere with the paper feed. Check the rollers for ink residue or debris and clean them with lint-free cloth dampened in isopropyl alcohol.
Also, ensure that the CISS tubing moves freely with the carriage. It should loop smoothly without tension - if it catches on the frame, it can trigger both jams and carriage errors.
When to Seek Professional Help
If you've tried the above and the problem persists - particularly with white ink flow - it might indicate a blockage inside the printhead or ink line that requires specialized cleaning equipment.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting or repair support. However, we do offer an in-person diagnostic and repair service at our local facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Because of high demand, repairs are performed on a first-come, first-served basis and may take a few weeks. We handle both full-printer and specific-part repairs, depending on your needs.
That said, if you'd like to try more self-guided fixes, we encourage you to explore our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies).
