You have an Epson ET-8550, and everything was working fine. Now, it suddenly tries to feed paper, printing a page, and stops. You might hear a beep, then an error message about a paper jam. However, when you open the machine, you may not find any paper visible stuck inside.
This problem confuses users, as there is no explicit blockage, but printing fails every time. This article will explain the actual reason behind this issue and how to solve it. We also have a video showing the repair so you can see what we are discussing!
Analyzing the ET-8550 Paper Jam Error
A paper jam error may indicate an issue with the duplexer (the piece that flips the paper for printing on both sides of it). But if the printer keeps trying to pick up paper and start printing, eventually stopping, it’s more likely to be a sensor issue than a mechanical jam.
The ET-8550 has a dogmatic order of operations when you feed and print:
- It pumps the paper and verifies the paper Feed (PF) scale and speed.
- It moves the printhead back and forth to make sure everything is aligned.
- The PF rod rotates and the APG lever pops up to adjust for print quality.
- Also, the printer tries to print but immediately stops, pulling the paper back, causing the error.
- This indicates that instead of a mechanical jam, the printer incorrectly interprets that paper is moving due to a failing sensor.
Paper Feed Error Troubleshooting Basics
Before replacing the ET-8550 (that isn't the solution), it's worth understanding what most commonly causes paper feeding errors in the ET-8550:
Dirty or Worn-Out Feed Rollers
As paper dust and debris build up on the feed rollers over time, they can no longer appropriately grip the paper, leading to misfeeds and paper jams. Cleaning the rollers may fix minor feeding problems.
Faulty PE Sensor (Paper Ejection Sensor)
When the PE sensor malfunctions, the paper is fed without stopping, with the printer continually ejecting blank paper sheets. That’s not the concern in this case, but it’s a frequent culprit for other paper feed problems.
If the printer loads the paper, stops, and reverses, the PW sensor might be the problem. The Paper Width Sensor measures the width of the paper to ensure the correct alignment of the print job. When that fails, the printer misreads the paper's position, reversing the feed and yielding a jam error.
Common Issues with Page Width Sensors
- This is the way code phrase data is output from the error note. If the printer extrudes paper but sticks after running its printing sequence, backs out the paper, and throws the error, the PW sensor is most likely at fault.
- Look for visible blockages. When You Have Not Love: A sensor malfunction is the most likely culprit if there’s no physical jam but the error continues.
- Inspect the PW sensor. It should not correctly detect paper width if it looks dirty or worn.
Replacing the Page Width Sensor
It is easy to replace the PW sensor. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: take the printer apart
Well, to access the PW sensor, you need to open the printer's top cover to access the second video showing how to assemble the ET-8550 safely. Go check out that video for step-by-step instructions.
Step 2: Locate the PW Sensor
The PW sensor sits behind some internal components. Remove any components needed for access.
Step 3: Wire and install the new PW sensor
- Expunge the defective sensor and compare with the alternative. This sensor should be clean and ready to install.
- Place the new sensor in the correct orientation in its spot.
- Purpose build a complete product as we say, the next part will be to fix the sensor, and solder everything.
Step 4: Reassemble the Printer and Test
Reassemble the printer and perform a test print with the new sensor installed. If the diagnosis is correct, the printer should now feed paper without problems.

Final Thoughts
User experience assumes mechanical obstructions or duplexer malfunctions cause the paper jam error in the Epson ET-8550. However, it is often due to sensor issues, particularly the PW sensor. You can fix the printer by accurately diagnosing the problem and replacing the defective sensor.
