How to Convert a CIS Ink Cartridge into a Refillable Cartridge: What You Need to Know

Question:
I watched your video about troubleshooting Continuous Ink Supply (CIS) systems when some colors are missing (watch here), and I’m wondering—how can I convert a CIS cartridge into a regular refillable cartridge?

Answer:
Converting a CIS Cartridge into a Refillable Cartridge

Technically, it is possible to convert a Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS) cartridge into a refillable one, but there are a few key considerations and caveats you should know before proceeding.

How to Do the Conversion

To convert a CIS cartridge into a refillable cartridge, you can simply:

  1. Unplug the ink tubes connected to the external ink reservoir.

  2. Leave the hole—where the tube was connected—open, as refillable cartridges require air to flow in to displace the ink as it is used.

  3. If the cartridge doesn’t already have an air vent, make sure to create one, or the ink won’t flow properly. Refillable cartridges need this vent to work, whereas CIS cartridges rely on a sealed vacuum system.

But Should You Convert It?

While it’s technically possible, we do not recommend converting a CIS cartridge into a standard refillable one for the following reasons:

  • Cartridge Size: CIS cartridges are generally smaller because they’re designed to receive a continuous supply of ink from external tanks. This means they hold less ink internally and are not ideal for standalone use.

  • Ink Pressure Design: The internal architecture of CIS cartridges is optimized for a siphon-based system with external pressure balance. Once you remove the tubes, the internal chambers might not regulate ink properly, resulting in inconsistent output or even ink starvation.

  • Airflow Differences: As mentioned, CIS systems must be airtight, while refillable cartridges require airflow. Converting one to the other without properly accounting for this can cause ink flow problems, similar to what’s described in your original question—colors missing due to poor ink delivery.

Better Alternative

If you're looking to stop using the CIS system and simplify your setup, the better route is to purchase a dedicated refillable cartridge set that’s designed for your specific printer model. These are more reliable, easier to maintain, and ensure proper ink flow and color consistency.

Final Thoughts

Printer modifications like converting cartridge systems may seem like a shortcut, but they often introduce more complications in the long run. We advise careful consideration and, when possible, using purpose-built parts for your setup.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. So, it might take a few weeks before we can get your printer to drop it off. Our services are structured to repair either a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we highly recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be most efficient. Plus, YouTube might suggest relevant videos from other channels that could assist you.
