Fixing the Epson ET-8550 “Scanner Blocked” Error After DTF Conversion: Causes and Solutions

Question:

I just set up my Epson ET-8550, which I converted to DTF with an Off Nova Immerse system. Upon powering it on, the printer reports that the scanner has packaging material, yet there is none. I can't get past this screen to complete the setup. What’s going on?

Answer:

Understanding the Error

The Epson ET-8550 is equipped with a flatbed scanner, and its startup routine checks that the scanner is clear and operational. After a DTF conversion, the printer might report this error even if there’s nothing physically blocking the scanner. This is typically due to one of the following causes:

1. Loose or Damaged FFC (Flat Flexible Cable)

  • How it works: The scanner is connected to the mainboard via a flat flexible cable (FFC).

  • Why it matters: During the DTF conversion process, this cable might be bent, pinched, or partially disconnected, especially if the scanner unit was lifted or shifted.

  • Symptoms: If the traces in the cable are broken or there's oxidation at the contact points, the printer may falsely interpret it as a physical obstruction.

  • Fix: Open the top section of the printer and inspect the FFC connection to the scanner. Ensure the contacts are clean, seated properly, and show no visible damage. If you suspect internal breaks, replace the cable.

2. Dirty or Misaligned Scanner Sensor

  • How it works: The scanner detects the scanning bed using a sensor strip (often a linear CCD or CIS sensor).

  • Why it matters: Even a small amount of dust or residue from DTF powder can interfere with the sensor’s startup check.

  • Symptoms: A speck of powder, lint, or smudge may be enough to trick the printer into thinking the scanner is obstructed.

  • Fix: Clean the scanner glass and sensor area with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Make sure no DTF powder residue is on the sensor or moving parts.

3. Faulty or Unplugged Scanner Module

  • How it works: In some conversions, users intentionally disconnect or deactivate the scanner unit to make room for DTF modifications.

  • Why it matters: If the firmware still expects the scanner to be operational, the absence of a signal can generate an error message, even if the scanner has been physically removed.

  • Symptoms: “Packaging material on scanner” or general scanner initialization errors.

  • Fix: You have two options:

    • Re-enable the scanner: Reconnect the module and allow it to complete its startup check.

    • Firmware workaround: Some advanced users modify firmware settings to bypass scanner checks, but this is risky and not recommended unless you're highly experienced.

Next Steps

If none of the above resolves the issue, consider temporarily reconnecting the original scanner setup to complete the initial startup routine. After that, you may be able to disconnect it again without persistent errors (depending on firmware behavior).

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we cannot provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Getting your printer to drop off may take a few weeks. Our services are structured to repair a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be most efficient. Plus, YouTube might suggest relevant videos from other channels that could assist you.
