Fixing Silicone Seal Fitment Issues on Epson ET-8550 Dampers

Question:
I watched your video STOP Disaster! Epson ET-8550 Ink Leaking from Printhead - Causes and Solutions. The problem I'm running into is that the silicone seal seems too thick, and it won't allow the damper's metal bracket to latch properly. What can I do to resolve this?

Answer:

Regarding your concern, the fitment issue comes down to which silicone seal you're using. We manufacture two types of silicone seals for Epson dampers:

  1. Thin Seal (Add-On Seal):

    • This version is designed to be placed on top of the original black grommet.

    • It provides additional sealing without removing the factory-installed grommet.

    • Because it's thinner, the damper's metal bracket should latch normally when this type is installed correctly.

  2. Thick Seal (Replacement Seal):

    • This version is designed to replace the black grommet entirely.

    • If you try to install it while leaving the original grommet in place, it will be too thick, preventing the damper's metal latch from securing properly.

    • In this case, the solution is to carefully remove the black grommet and then install the thick seal as a full replacement.

Key Checks and Fixes

  • Verify whether you ordered the thin add-on seal or the thick replacement seal. Installing the wrong one for your setup will cause latch interference.

  • If using the thick seal, make sure the old grommet is completely removed before installing.

  • Inspect the damper's bracket for any misalignment or bending-sometimes repeated attempts at latching can slightly warp the bracket, adding to the tightness issue.

By matching the correct seal type with the correct installation method, the damper bracket should lock down firmly, preventing leaks while maintaining proper pressure balance in the ink system.

Addressing printer leaks and fitment issues can be tricky because of the hands-on adjustments required. For this reason, we aren't able to provide remote troubleshooting or repair services. However, we do offer in-person diagnostic and repair services at our local repair facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Since this service is in high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can evaluate your printer. We provide both full printer repairs and part-specific services, though we also acknowledge that our rates may not be the most budget-friendly. That's why we recommend exploring self-help solutions through resources like our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies).
